Psuedo Scents- Procurement/Issues - Training - Page 1

Where and what manufactures would you recommend?

Any conflict between pseudo and real? where it is noticed? etc....

methodologies preferred?

Just trying to open this up and get an informational training thread going. For those whom have trained/certified- narcotics/cadaver/explosives.

I've trained and Certified Tobacco Detection & Narcotic Dogs, never used Psuedo scents, and from what I have heard they are not that good. Scent logic is one brand that claims to be as close to the real thing as possible.

>  "Sigma" is probably the most popular pseudo company. I used the pseudo heroin for awhile after mine went bad and had to dispose of it until my agency was able to procure new heroin for training.
>  I trained 2 new teams utilizing it and when I took them to other agencies with the real stuff, they hit on all the heroin hides as well as any of the teams training each session.
>  If you are going to use "pseudo" you must ensure you are following the directions for shelving it. If you get questioned in court about using "pseudo", you best insure you can recite how it is properly stored as well as shelf life.
>  As far as I know, there has been no case overturned by using "pseudo for training, however I could be wrong. The easiest way to find out would be to look up Terry Flecks website and research the subject matter.

Well I am currently training cadaver dogs and one is almost ready for certification and we will not use pseudo scent due to obstacles in court. I do however realize that in some states it is not legal to possess human remains, where as where i am it is not a problem, in addition the org that I will certify through will not accept pseudo aids.

I have used them once in training and my dog did alert to them.  However, I have real narcotics issued to me as my training aids.  Since I have the real aids I have no need for pseudo.  It does make court testimony a non issue and we certify on the real drugs. 

I can see the benefit for those that do not have access to real training aids.  I can also see an advantage in transporting pseudo explosives as opposed to the real thing.  Our Bomb dog handler has a lot of restrictions on him in regards to his aids and it makes transporting and training at new locations inconvenient.  I do not have any issues transporting my narcotics aids in my Police car and can virtually train anywhere I need too.

For Cadaver Detection, one of our Handlers uses blood soaked articles (bandages) and human teeth.
 
Most recently mine from the Dentist, most Dentist will provide teeth and blood soaked bandages

For cadaver those aids work great, I am lucky in that I have some connections so I have a pretty sizeable arsenal of training aids. You can use old fingernails, blood from wounds and save the bandages, old baby teeth, hair from haircuts etc.

Another option for Cadaver dog scents is to approach funeral homes with professionalism and confidentialty, they may provide sheets or blankets which have the desired scent on them.
