I know everybody thinks their own puppy is the smartest, but is there really a way to tell? Bella (she just turned 4 months) catches on almost instantly to whatver I am trying to teach her. She stares at me so intently sometimes waiting for me to speak that it makes me laugh. Is she smarter than the average puppy or am I just getting better at communicating what I want? Some puppies seem almost brain dead and completely ignore you when you are trying to teach them. Bella also has a more calm, easy going (non-hyper) personality so maybe that helps her pay attention?

yes, there are tests to evaluate the IQ of dogs .. and perhaps they can be altered to test the same with pups -- but one cannot forget the purpose for which a breed was bered for -- that is you cannpot expect the same of a beagle , a bloodhound and a german shepherd becuase they have innate different behavioral traits -- although in gnererality intelligence is based on a being to gather , assimilate information and then be able to recall it and appliy it when applicable- we do this we humans and so to a degree we can extrapolate this to canines .. as long as we understand the genetic predisposition of the breed -- in one study it was determined that poodles were one , if not the most , intelligent canine due to it's problem solving ability
