Can anyone tell me about Royal Canine dry dog food...we are thinking about using this on our dogs. We have heard good things....thanks

Were you looking at a particular formula? As far as ingredients go, I don't think there is anything special about their food...they use some of the same things as other mid-range kibbles. It's not 'bad', but there are many more better quality commercial diets. Some people swear by Royal Canin though...just do what works for your dogs and what they need.

I have heard that the dogs poop is very manageable...doesn't smell as much and look like big pellets...I wanted to find out if this is the case...I would like to cut back on the poop if possible...thanks

I find Royal Canin an excellent food, all my dogs have lovely shiny coats. Yes the poop is more managable, and with 2 of my dogs which are really fussy they seem to enjoy it with no problems. It is quite expensive though for a smaller bag than you would get of other foods. Anyone got any other good quality foods that they use though, as i have a 15 months old female which i am finding very hard to put any weight on her, she is wormed every 3 months and eats very well.

Andy, Alot of my breeders in Germany use Royal Canin and they claim with good results and it is expensive. As for myself I use Performatrin medium adult dry dog food sold by the chain of Pet Value. I would not go off it as it has always given me excellent results all the way around. 40 lb. bag about $24.95

My boy loves it and it has really improved his coat. His coat is now much softer and as for poop compared to purina one or purina pro plan Ive noticed now that it seems to be smaller and a little less. I have recently switched over to eukanuba or however you spell it. I got the adult premium large breed. Ive been mixing the 2 and now he wont eat until I pour the Eukanuba in. The Eukanuba does run about 10 dollars more on a 40 pound bag though. Also, royal canin has the breed specific food for gsd's, which is supposed to help with gsd's sensitive stomachs and so on, incase you havent noticed.

Andy, I have used Royal Canine. It is okay, but nothing to brag about. I have also used other types of dog foods that are just as good. The best thing to do is try it and see how your dog does on it. If you like the results that it gives you then you have found the right dog food for yourself and dog. The main thing is use whats best for your dog and don't get caught up in fancy brand name dog foods, because most premium dog foods will do your dog just fine. Andy, let your dog tell you what type of dog food that he likes. He is the one who has to eat it not us. So try different types of premium dog foods and see what he likes best.

Andy I've been using Royal Canin German Shepherd 24 for my dog for about a year now (He'll be 2 yrs old in about 2 weeks). Two 45 lb bags last me about 3 months and costs about $100/-. He gets 3-4 cups per day and that's it. On Tuesdays he gets 2 cups Royal Canin + 1 lb beef steak. On Thursdays he gets 2 cups Royal Canin + a can of either sardines or herring in oil. On Sundays he gets 1 cup + a Large Beef marrow bone. He's lean, got great drive and his coat is great as you can see at: http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/425148.html

Royal Canin makes a big deal out of claiming they have a special formula in their German Shepherd 24 kibble, but as others have already written, if you read the label, it is really quite ordinary but more expensive than ordinary. (Advertising cost money) Chicken appears to be their main ingredient. Personally I prefer to see someother meat than chicken for GSDs as the lead ingredient. I will say this, most dogs I have seen love the smell and like eating it. I have used it successfully as tracking bait rather than hot dogs. Dogs still work to find it and insects don't bother it. As for better premium foods, well you can get almost as many answers are as there are GSD owners. Having said that I will list a few that club members use: Wellness Supermix 5, Innova, Eagle, Flint River, Canidae, California Natural, & Solid Gold. If you google search on "best rated dog foods" or "dog foods compared" etc, you will find some good sites which list ingredients and allow you to compare.
