I would like to get your opinions and want to educate myself about the drawbacks of the steep and flat croups versus a normal croups. I mean what are the disadvantages in showing in the ring and effect on dog's movement. Also how much a judge would deduct points on a scale of 10 ?

If the croup is flat the dog won't under reach fully and will kick up behind. If the croup is steep the dog will under reach but won't follow through behind. The correct 30 degree croup, (as the fulcrum of the rear quarter), if of proper length (on a 26" male about 9 inches) will allow for ideal stroking action, i.e. full under reach, good contraction of both knee and hock joints at the maximum point of contraction, and a complete follow through. Study the rear action of Hagadahl's Arex.

Do you have any pictures (examples) of these I can see? It's hard for me to get a visual. If not, don't worry about it. Thanks!

Lenny -- that is a good explanation in response to cybervision -- this is confusing to newcomers -- becuase if you look at many a current show dog -- the so called ROACHED back is of merit -- seems like the rear assmbly is tucked under -- IMO-- granted the GSD is a trotter -- but also the GSD is a multifunctional dog --- what i am seeing is the loss of versatility in the GSD with this roach structure -- sure the trott is there but what about jumping abitilies , speed in movement, , spinning on a dime that is needed for herding , other agile movements -- will you folks on the forum adress that in regards to croup -- thanks

Hello Cybervision, I had a oppurtunity to discuss with a SV judge. i asked the same question and his reply was ,there are ideal angles mentioned according to breed standard. But that is not the case always. What is important what is overall effect that is how the dog is moving. For example croup can be steep or flat but if with overall anatomy it is translated into a harmonic movement then there is no problem. I hope you understand. I would suggest you see a video by Mr. Ricardo Carbajal which is very good describing the effects of anatomy. This is link to his site from where you can purchase the video. He has explained the mechanics in very simpified language. http://www.delconosur.net/index.html
