Dawn G. Bonome

I have a question that needs to be answered once and for all. I say no, but this person has said that they are. Are long coats used for breeding in Germany and are they also registered with the SV? I thought that long coats are a major fault, and that they are sold as pets. Is this all changed with the SV? Dawn Bonome

Yes long coated GSD are used for breeding in Germany, but not within the SV. Most long coat GSD pups get regular SV papers at the time of tattooing, so with other registries they are fully registered dogs that are eligible for breeding. This is why many long coats can be exported to the US for example and get AKC registered. There are separate clubs in Germany that specialize in breeding with long coats and they have a very strong and loyal following. Outside of Germany there is the assumption that the coats are lesser valued pups and should cost less. Quite the opposite is true in Germany. Breeders from those clubs happily gobble up any well bred pup they can get their hands on, especially the new bloodlines that become prominent after the big events. The longcoats produced within these clubs often are also sold for higher prices than regular GSD pups. The long coat clubs are not FCI associated (yet, but been trying to, like the whites used to and they are now FCI recognized), so their pups cannot be AKC registered. There has been talk within the SV for a while whether or not to allow the coats back in. Probably because of the popularity of the coats and the missed income should they ever receive full FCI status as a separate breed. But nothing definite yet and if, it will still probably take a few years until the SV might budge on the issue.

Dittos on the SV Papers coming with the long coats. I have owned 2. They came with the pink SV papers and were subsequently registered with the AKC. One male, and one female. Neither was ever bred and both died at age 14. Both were wonderful dogs, only difference at all was the long coats.
