Where did you get your experience? - Page 1

I am curious as to how many of the breeders got started and where or how did you get your experience as far as learning the correct structure of a dog, being able to pick a pick of the litter pup, choosing which dogs to breed and other things of that nature? Did you have a mentor or work for and with a breeder or did you just learn through your own hands on experience? Certainly you will make a lot of mistakes in the beginning if your new to breeding and especially to breed to the SV standard. It seems like those mistakes could be very expensive when your purchasing dogs for a high price, so I would like to know what others beginning experiences consisted of to get to that comfort zone. Thanks!

In my personal case, I took the plunge by concentrating on health, temperament, biddability, and not line breeding closely. I also knew the breeding partners as they were my own dogs and knew alot about them, their strengths and weaknesses, and their pheno and geno type were very complimentary. I was able to see what each of my dogs produce in this litter. I only had 2 males, both of whose testicles have descended, I had no coats in a litter of 10. All ears went up on their own. I did not have a mentor. I felt it more like a calling and it has been more than rewarding. The ultimate goal being happy puppy owners who think that they got the best and smartest puppy in the world. What struck me most though during this process, was finding what a tremendous responsibility it is to ensure that the puppies are placed in good homes.

I got my experience in the back seat of a 56 Chevy.
