Any suggestions for good tracking bait (either commercial or for homemade) that won't attract ants and won't spoil if the track ages for a long time? My dogs just aren't thrilled with tracking for kibble...

Whatever you use, if you freeze it first, and then only let it thaw just enough to be edible, the ants will stay off it. I use kibble. You can use small pieces of hot dog, pieces of Natural Balance rolls, and any kind of thing, including cheese.....whatever your dog likes. However, sometimes it is important to use something that does not smell a lot so the dog learns to discriiminate the disturbed ground, vs. just smelling for food.

I use freeze dried liver - ants don't seem to like it so much.. if your dog will indicate an article... try film canisters or small items that can be closed and then you can use whatever you want inside !

Dkiah, Your idea about film canisters is a great idea! But do they then only develop a liking for indicating such an item?

I have had the same issue as of late. Dog hates ant covered bait. However, I did find that the ants do not like the Natural Balance Logs or the Batanical Logs. I just slice those, cut into small pieces, and so far they have worked well.

Where are you located? And what kind of tracking are you doing...dirt or grass or...?

freeze dried liver is $$$$$$$$$ eeek!!! I like the natural balance rolls too.... I have one gourmet dog too.....she likes Brie cheese rind for article rewards!!!!!!!! Only thing that got her to not blow them off and do them eagerly!! LOL

Kougar!!! You are teaching your dogs to be cheese experts ? What will they want next for a reward? The best wines? Cheers, Sharyn

LOL LOL No - I am not breaking the 55 Moutan cadet Rothschilds for them - I want to sell it!!!! LOL I love Brie, but won't eat the rind - and found that the dogs sit and drool like St Bernards for it! High value reward I think the term is in the training manuals....

I don't understand why people train there dogs to track with the use of food. I know it worked for ET but to put food on the ground so your dog will keep his nose down is not good. There are other methods without the use of food. I just think it is bad practice to use food in any type of training. Your dog must work for you not a treat. I worked with my k-9 partner for years on the street and also trained many dogs and have never used food. Try other methods other then food.
