What is a slip mating ?

Inc, I think Bhall is talking about an outside tie.

Bhall, it does happen sometimes, so long as the male does get some semen inside the female, there is a chance of puppies. If they tied for any length of time, you've probably got the possibility of puppies. Does the female have a stricture? If not, and if she's still receptive to a male, I would try breeding them again, but assist the dogs by having one person hold the female still and the other help the male, just in case she is moving forward at the wrong time.

Good luck!

I had a female get pregnant from an outside tie. We did hold them together for some time. In January, in snow, at 10pm at night. Not an experience I'd care to repeat!

I have been breeding my male, which has never had an outside tie or slipped mating in sevsral  breedings,  to a client's female. He has brought her everyday from day 12 of her cycle. We have been able to get outside ties with assistance from us for seven straight days. On day 19, today, they fully tied for 15 minutes without assistance. We will try for a second tie in two days.  The three females that were previously bred by my male were bred between 10 to 16 days in cycle, so this female had me puzzled. I have come to the conclusion that some females are not ready for breeding at usual times in there cycle. Some are ready much later even if they are flagging. You need to feel that the vulva is soft, not swollen and hard. .Also,  place a gloved finger with lubricant (KY jelly)into the female to check that she is not still too constricted for the male to fully penetrate and achieve a tie.  I would keep trying to bred your female everyday or every other day until you get a tie or two. Hope my experience helps with your slipped mating.

Or follow up with an AI.

My males normally have no trouble getting normal ties, but I have had a couple females recently who it seemed could not accept the stud dog "wholly".  One was a female, first breeding, very small female "in every way".  IMO he simply didn't fit all the way, or she was too tight for him.  It was an outside tie, every single time.  She stood fine and I just ended up holding them together until I almost died (bad back), enough time for semen to get in there and get where it was supposed to be before I allowed him to slip.  I followed that up with an AI I did myself.  She did get pregnant and had a nice sized litter with natural whelp, no problems.

The other female was huge (oversized), and FAT.  Owner was a looney-tune too - and I wouldn't have agreed to breed this female at all if I hadn't had a previous agreement with this person.  The female was not only FAT, but completely out of shape.  My stud dog could not get a tie with her either - IMO she was too "flabby" and could not hold the tie.  I held them together too and followed up with an AI.  She did not get pregnant.  I will not be repeating that breeding (did not accept the stud fee).

I spoke to my repro vet about it, and he was surprised the first female did get pregnant without a natural tie.  He told me that the whole process is necessary for successful breeding - not only the male's semen, but the female's contractions during the natural tie are also important.  Without a tie, the female will not have contractions, and the semen will not be moved where it is supposed to be.  He says same goes for an "in home" AI.  He recommended coming in for a trans-cervical AI (delivering the semen through the cervix) in any cases where a natural tie is not possible for some reason.

I am just researching the issue and many females do become pregnant with a slip tie.  My voodoo always tied, however he didn't with Armina but she is pregnant.  Just something else to research.
