Dog kills another family pet, should it be put down?

I have a friend who has a German Shepherd that killed her toy poodle last weekend.
Do you think the dog should be put down or it it merely the owners fault?
Also, this is the second time this dog attacked this poodle. The first time the poodle almost died and required surgery.

I would think it is up to the owners, and I would think it unwise to get another dog if they keep the GSD. And since this was a second offense, they knew the situation was dangerous for the poodle, and they did not take the proper steps to prevent it happening again. Their fault, not the dog's.

I do think it is the owner's responsibility. I had an ex boyfriend who's dog killed my cat and then when he was having an affair with his ex-girlfriend, the dog attacked her yorkie and had to be taken to the emergency vet. He joked about it and took absolutely no responsibility for either situation - even posting jokes on various forums. Unfortunately, he later allowed that dog to suffer and die without even taking him to the vet.....some owners amaze me and should never be allowed to own dogs.....

Why should TWO dogs die because of their owner's stupidity??? Why on Earth was those two ever allowed near each other again???

As a footnote - I never blamed the dog - I loved that dog - it was the owner that had no idea how to work with his dogs. Being prey animals, it is what it is. It is totally the owner's responsibility to train the dog and he did nothing to work with his dogs. His dogs were primarily a "show" for his own insecurities and something to own. It was very sad. After me and the ex - a new woman and too busy to care for his dog - let it lie suffering for over a day and die. The dog was a great dog and never deserved an owner like that.

The owner's fault, and no, not sure that it should be put down.

They must have realized the two dogs could not be together, and by letting them be together, they knew the poodle was endangered.

Perhaps some training, and some education of animal behavior for the owners, and no other pets until this dog dies of old age.

How stupid to put these dogs back together after the first incident. No, the dog shouldn't be put down, he should be taken away from the irresponsible owners that let the poodle be killed. Some people lack the common sense to own animals. Amazing, to even consider putting the dog down....Find a new home for the dog with a more responsible family.

Truly, I think it depends on the nature of the attack; what precipitated the outburst.

Was it a prey-killing, a scuffle over resources, was the poodle pesting the GSD, or did the GSD just go after the poodle when it was doing nothing whatsoever, and attack it? Without knowing the behavioral trigger, I wouldn't want to say whether the dog should be put down or not. If the poodle is gnerally antagonistic towards the GSD, then it would be most reasonable to find a new home for the poodle, IMO.

Either way, I think the owners are responsible. If one dog attacked and almost killed another dog, then I'd like to think a savy owner would not put the dogs in a situation where the incident could repeat itself.

Jc, you didn't read it carefully; the poodle is DEAD. This is the SECOND TIME the GSD attacked it. How dumb are these people???
