Girl mauled by 2 rottweilers

So sad. People really do need to control their dogs.

Maybe there should be a license for pet owners. A person wishing to be a pet owner must go through a training process and then a test in order to earn a license before they can have a pet.

What do you think?

The problem with that seemingly good idea is, who decides what the test is?  No two trainers can agree on anything, except that the third is wrong.  How could you possibly establish a universal idea of what "correct" is?

What happens if they decide to revoke licenses because you work your dog in a bite sport to "make them vicious"?
What if they decide to revoke licenses because your dog wasn't spayed at six months to prevent unwanted litters [which, in many breeds is condemning the dog to major structural issues]?

No, they need much, much harsher penalties for people who don't obey the already established dog ownership laws.
Enforce the laws we already have.

If they did what you suggest then there would 1000's of extra dogs a week in shelters. The goverment(s) have to think logical aswell as what could benifit dogs and potential victims

You are both correct.

Mudwick: you are definetely correct. The laws just have to be very strictly enforced and correctly enforced.

Pertaining to this specific tragedy,

The dogs were off their own property.

One has to wonder, was this the first time they'd been roaming at large?

If so, would catching them, and either requiring the owner to demonstrate sufficient improvements to contain the dogs, or causing the owner to forfeit the dogs, have saved that girl from being mauled?

I don't know of many places in the "western world" where dogs are permitted to run free and at large in populated areas.
Enforce the laws that already exist- and you don't have a problem.

This is the very reason I always carry some sort of weapon on me when I go walking with my dog. I live in farm country and it seems the farmers dont believe in fences or leashes and then you have the morons who drop their dogs and run. I hope this owner pays heavy for what he/she let their dogs do.

This is ao sad I do hope the girl makes a full recovery I do not blame the dogs it is the owners it is like other things in life some people should not be allowed to have dogs I hope the owner gets whats coming to them  the dogs are paying the price why not the owners to

by geordiegaviino on 30 August 2010 - 14:08

Heidi1068 - the owner has been charged and she signed the permission to have her dogs put down. Am sure feels dreadfull but am sure lessons can be learnt from this

I agree blame the owner, however these dogs should be destroyed for their actions.

by shostring on 30 August 2010 - 16:08

Felloffher I agree the dogs should never have done this but they pay the price with thair lifes so owner should get real punishment not just a slap on the wrist  I hope an example is showen in the punishment that the law gives them
