My boy is 16 months and have been feeding him Royal Canin for GSD's for about 2 months now. The first bag or two we had no problems. However this last bag he never wanted to eat any of it from the time I opened it. He ate it Im sure out of hunger and he began getting diarrhea. The diarrhea continued and got worse to where he couldn't even hold it. I switched him to Purina One and now he's fine. My question is, is if anyone else has ever had this problem with Royal Canin or was it just a bag that had spoiled? I want the best for my boy and was wondering if anyone could recommend anything better, I want the best. Thank you for any suggestions or help with this matter.

I been feeding Royal Canin exclusively for a few years now. I use the puppy / GSD 24 etc depending on the age of the dog. The dogs love it and all do really well on it. My neighbour also keeps and breeds GSDs and uses it. He has reared several litters using it and no problems to date. (No I have no connections with Royal Canin lol)

The man I got my dog from was feeding his dogs RC but he's not anymore. I don't know why. I feed my dog Purina One for large breed puppies and it works just fine.

I feed Royal Canin in my kennel to my personal dogs and to all boarders too. That is at least 24 dogs who are fed daily and sometimes a lot more. I have never had any issue with the food being bad. Was it possible the bag had gotten wet? If not, it is highly unlikely it was the food and in fact, perhaps the dog had some sort of virus or bacterial infection that he was able to fight on his own. Or, he might have had some reason for a parasitic infection to show, even though normally he seemed fine. In my opinion, for kibble, RC is the best. There are other premium foods too which all have their pluses. But what you are describing sounds more like an illness to me. What you should do is call the place where you bought the food just to tell them about it. But I would be willing to bet that they have not had similar complaints. RC has an outstanding quality control program. Good luck.

I prefer Eagle pack, it has really improved my dogs coats and energy levels, I have been using for about 6 months now and drive 140 miles one way every other month to pick it up..Well worth it. Good luck!

Good Morning Mosemancr, I had the exact opposite experience. My(Now 3 yrs old)pup had awful troubles with diarrhea. After trying everything under the sun it was Royal Canin 24 that did the trick. Perhaps it was a bad batch? Or maybe break his feedings into smaller but more meals? (this helped us a little too) Another good food is Canidae which my new pup is on no problems with him

I feed Royal Canin Maxi 24 with good results. The dogs all have decent skin and hair and produce firm stools. The only other food that I feed is Bil-Jac large breed puppy for the babies as the kibble is a bit smaller and there seems to be little danger of it swelling inside the stomach. Perhaps as the others have said you just received a bag of spoiled/tainted food. Every now and then I open a bag and the odour seems more pungent than normal, but the dogs seemed to like it and they have no problems. That has never happened to me but I have only used it for the past four (4) years and I only purchase one (1) bag/week normally. As was stated above, the size of the meal may have an effect. I have at least one (1) bitch who if she eats too much in one setting will develop not diarrhoea, but a very loose stool. The only time this has been an issue is when I have been travelling and had someone else feeding my dogs. It sounds as if your dog knew something was wrong with the food. Hopefully it was just one (1) bag of bad food. If you still have that bag I would contact Royal Canin about this issue, just in case there is a production run of tainted food. Bob-O

Our dogs were never that fond of RC, and we had very loose stools. When I opened a fresh bag and found it infested with meal worms, we switched to Purina One. The dogs are doing great on it, still not completely happy with the poop, but they are always a bit loose when excited, (just 23 hours a day). I did send an e-mail to RC to complain about the bad bag, but never heard back from them. Lorri

I am a dedicated Royal Canin fan , feed all my dogs on the Maxi Adult and they all do very well, the baby dog sensitive is great for weaning too. Maybe you just got a dodgy bag that had got damp, I have always found Royal Canin very helpful with problems and have replaced the odd bag for me with no hassle. Have you spoken to them ?
