If i buy a puppy when it is four months old, will i have a problem bonding with him?

You shouldn't have any problems. Most dogs adjust quickly. I bought my first Schutzhund dog when she was only 4 months old and she acted like she belonged with me the first day. Some may take 4-5 days to adjust to new sorroundings. Playing ball and tug with a rag will help bond since they are both fun things for the dog to do. Jeff

I have bought puppies from 8 weeks old to a 3.5 year old SchH III, and in between. I have NEVER had a problem bonding with these animals. At all ages, I have found they have an innate ablility to transfer loyalty and bond with the new owner. It is just part of a German Shepherd's charachter. I don't think you have anything to be concerned about, in that department. Stephen

I was a little nervous earlier on so thanks for the input, it really helped.

I recently had someone come out to look at a 6 month old puppy. When they arrived I let the puppy out. He immediately went to up them with a tail wagging, friendly greeting. He then did what every good GSD should do, which was to go on about his business. He went searching the house for toys and eventually grabbed a squeaky toy and went to play. Despite the fact that she said he was the nicest puppy she had seen, she ended up not buying him because he did not fall instantly in love with her. The point I'm trying to make is that if you go see this puppy before you buy him, be prepared for him to behave like a GSD. Don't get nervous if he doesn't sit next to you and stare longingly into your eyes. As Stephen said, they will transfer loyalty, just not instantly, and definitely not in the presents of the current owner. They're just not wired that way. Good luck :))
