Do you walk regularly together (daily) with your dog?   (I ask because I have heard of some Owners who only take their dog for walks at the weekend)!!!

Or others who mainly prefer to allow their dog access to a very large area outside their home.   (Would this be due to a considered lack of time, or concern for control of dog in a public area)?

How often daily do you take your dog out with you for specific exercise, not counting just accompanying you to various places here or there for instance?  (Most people seem to have once or twice daily, while others are several times a day).

Vixen

We walk, or jog [depends on my knees] somewhere around 4 miles a day.

In inclement weather, or when my knees can't even tolerate walking that distance, the dog has her own treadmill [no, she's not spoiled or anything.]

This is in addition to tracking a few times a week, and of course, training with the club.

Could she use more exercise?  Probably.

Since I no longer have a yard to speak of, Drake does not cross the threshhold without me.  So, if he's out, I'm out.  We NORMALLY walk twice a day, sometimes three times, about 3-4 miles each walk.  I also take him to an open field and give him off-lead time about twice a week.  Periodically, we go to the woods for a romp and hike.  I just started a new job and my time this week has been extremely short, so he did NOT get the exercise he needs this week and I've got to shorten my hours.  He was limited to a short walk each morning and that will not do for either of us.  I did take him to the field twice this week but that's still not enough... I have to hit the lottery or something, and SOON!  It's pretty bad when you have to choose between exercising or feeding him!  It would be REALLY nice if I could get my long awaited settlement from the X2B, life would be much easier.

Mudwick, sounds like your dog might be described as a 'couch potato'! - I think not!   LOL.
PS.  Sorry to hear about your knee problem.  Hope things improve.

GSDtravels, Sorry to hear that your new job has influenced exercising with your dog.  HOWEVER, you clearly have your dog's best interests at heart.  Life sometimes is not ideally as we might prefer, but we can find good compromises.  Even though at present the amount of exercise may be restricted, you are still ensuring that you get out together for a period of exercise, with that field romp as and when possible.  Your dog is not 'clock watching' but enjoying being with you for some regular exercise together.

I walk 2-3 miles in the mornings before work, and train short sessions in the evenings. It is important to me to still walk and Jami loves it.
Always,

Hi Malshep, good to hear when we adapt the right schedule or level of exercise, interaction and sharing with our dogs that works well together.  Then Owner and Dog can enjoy!

Vixen,
The dog could *probably* run 10 miles a day, and still want more.  She's just an endless well of "go".

It'll be another 20 years before my knee gets fixed.  I need a full knee replacement, which my ortho won't do until age 50.
Instead they inject this stuff every month called SynVisc.  Its made out of the stuff in a Rooster's comb.  Weird.

I take my dogs out for a short walk before they get fed in the morning. All they want is to be fed so as soon as they do their business they take off back to their kennel. In the after noon I either take Zane to the park or Dar and Cactus and whoever doesn't go to the park to run(fenced in baseball feild) I then take the other for a walk in the back field.I rotate through the week who gets to go to the park. If I don't get to the park they run in the back feild....unless it is under water from the floods of the rainstorms.

added: The avatar pic of Dar is of a few days ago at the baseball field.

I do take my dogs for leisurely walks,  aside from taking them out to training, and letting them loose in the back yard to run.... but not nearly as often as I should! The pavement is VERY hot here during the day and since we train pretty late at night, I sleep later (weird schedule)
My husband leaves for work at 3 am and I am not waking my little son up before 7:30  a.m. to walk with mama and the dogs lol Especially since I allow him to stay up a little later than a toddler should ;-)
