Vom Mager

by Vom Mager on 03 August 2010 - 00:08

Thank you all with your great advice.  After I put him back on the chicken/rice/yogurt, his stool has returned back to normal.  I watch him everytime he goes out for any bad changes and he is doing great.  I added 1/4 cp of TOW to his chicken/rice/yogurt and watched him again and the stool is still firm.  Yeahh!!!!!!
I plan on keeping him with the 1/4 for another week then I will up it to 1/2 cup for a week and keep it simple.  He will be 2 this month but still my big baby.

As you can see, he is a happy boy once again.  Thank you all

Liz

It makes sense that he would have the runs since you've switched from a low quality of food with a lot of grains, to a super-premium food that is very rich. You did the right thing by mixing in gradually, also know that he will eat less since it's more digestable.

Get a bag of I/D Low-Residue from the vet (it will be either Royal Canin or SD, script food), I think you need to eliminate food as a cause of this.  Feeding I/D is the same as rice/chicken.  I would feed this for at least a week to see if it helps, or if you need additional medications.  If it subsides, mix this in gradually with the TOTW.  I will second the raw diet suggestion, but some people want to feed kibble.

Some causes of diarreah can be giardia (this may be impossible to treat until dogs immune system is ready), coccidia, undiagnosed whipworms (they stick to the intestines and may be missed on fecal test), the way to do a fecal test is w/ centrifuge, you are seeing eggs that have shed.   I've seen dogs given a clean fecal test at the vet, yet still see worms moving around in their waste, so there must be a margin of error.  Panacur is good b/c its broad spectrum of worms, needs to be given more than once.

For intermittent bouts I use Pro-Pectalin, works every time, you can order a tube online for around $8.   A good daily probiotic is Vetri-Science chewables or Animal Essentials powder.

Please do not feed your dog ID/Science Diet or anything from Hills which is all garbage food.  It has more processed garbage than any other foods.  These foods are in no comparison to TOTW as far as quality.  Feeding ID is Not the same as feeding chicken and rice.  I agree with the raw diet suggestion but find the recommendation of ID/Science Diet very disturbing.

It works, and yes it has the same exact effect of clearing up diarreah as rice/chicken.  Call it garbage all you want, but it's a prescription food with a purpose, it's used by many veterinary professionals.  I did not recommend it long-term, but it may help in this situation.
