Can anyone direct me to any info on the breeds history that goes back earlier than Horand,possibley with pics and detailed info.

I don't think he has alot of "pre-Horand" pix, but there's alot of info in there. Problem is this is a work-in-progress, and you'll notice that not everything is in perfect chronological order. So very late in the work you may find a divergence into Horand's ancestors, etc. There are also general references to the TYPES of dogs that went into the GS.
Of course, this is quite extensively covered in v. Stephanitz' book "The GSD in Word and Picture". Again, the same type of cautions apply.
