I was visiting with a friend this evening and while looking at her new puppy, I realized she had no undercoat. I have never seen this before. How common is it? Is it genetics or is there another reason for it?  Is it possible it will come in later? The puppy is 5-6 months old and looks like she has a young adult coat. There is no fuzz at all. Looks kinda flat. The length is a normal outer coat, but there is just no undercoat.  She is a solid blk with very little tan bleed through. Does the color have anything to do with it?  Something new for me today. Perfect example of, Never too old to learn....

Puppy coats go through a lot of changes by the time a puppy is twelve (12) months of age. Even littermates can have different coat types as a rule.

I have an adult female who has a nice stock coat. If you saw the photograph of her at the age of ten (10) weeks you would have sworn she was a longcoat. She does carry the longcoat gene - we found that out when she had a litter from a breeding with a male who carries the same gene.

No two (2) of my five (5) adult dogs have the same type of coat regarding stiffness and coarseness of their stock outer coats. They all have correct stock coats and all have the fluffy undercoat.

I would not be of any concern here, and would wait until the puppy is at least twelve (12) months of age to make the determination.

Best Regards,

Thanks Bob-O... However, since you are the only one that has repiled about this type of coat or lack thereof , I am alittle surprised..Is it that uncommon? Or is it that bad that no one wants respond?

I'm with Bob-O; wait till the pup's at least a year old. The coat goes throguh so many changes, some of them a bit nail-biting, before they get a nice, normal adult coat.

I've had several pups go through a "no undercoat" phase. It always makes me panic a little, but in the end they get it back, and get their full fur. Then usually they blow their topcoat... right before show season.
