Schaferhunden, not sure what your plan was there, but let me tell you (all) a few things you may not know about the vets who write that raw feeding is bad for dogs.

OK. At UCDavis, reputedly the second best vet school in the US, ONE dog, a wolf hybrid, died of salmonella after eating roadkill, which his highway worker owner brought home for him. ONE. It was not food from a store or even remotely reputable butcher. Based on that, the vet school decided to claim that dogs can die of perforated intestines and salmonella if they eat raw. (Later they determined that the wolf had some other issues that had messed up his immunity, but that's not the point when the Pet Food Industry is spending all their unimaginable excess money funding vet schools.) I know this because I used to teach at UCD, and because a very good friend of mine was going to that school at the time.

Here's what else I know: Purina and other companies bombard the students with pet products. They gave so much of it to my friend, who had about half a dozen GSDs, that it rotted two years later because there was just TOO MUCH of it. Oh and also because that friend fed one meal a day of raw chicken, the other of purina pro-plan, so yeah, the dog food stacked up unused.

Next: the vets had ONE, count 'em ONE, day of pet nutrition. It was taught by the folks from Purina, where all you have to add is love.

Do NOT give me ANY data about raw feeding from ANY vet who graduated from ANY vet school, because they simply CANNOT give an unbiased view. They also forget to add that the three main illnesses that keep vets in business are obesity and its various related diseases such as liver disease, cancer, etc.;, tooth rot, and boy oh boy does it bring in a couple bucks to clean them teeth!; and allergies, nearly all of which are the result of kibble. If the vets told us to feed raw, they would nearly all be out of business.

Ok. So do dogs die of all the stuff they are reputed to die of if they eat raw meals? Yes, in microscopically small numbers. Do dogs who eat kibble fare any better? Hell no---in massive numbers.

by Schaferhunden on 07 July 2010 - 15:07

I believe you. A lot of kibble has garbage in it. But i would not feed any food from the trash. VomMarischa good post.

by VomMarischal on 07 July 2010 - 15:07

Well, that's because you're not Janice Bartmess, but her dogs would have been LUCKY to eat from the trash.

so much fear.  I wonder what it's like to live a life driven by fear?  and you must be really scared to have been convinced that food a dog would normally eat is "bad" and unhealthy.  You know , the food they probably lived off of for a few thousand years, yet a new invention, kibble dog food, basically in it's current form for 50 years or less is what they should be eating, and the only "safe" food source.

So much fear, so little indpendent though.

"Schaferhunden", who I believe to be John La Torre, would not possibly have a competitive interest in all of this.. the one man who will SAVE the DDR dogs, singlehandedly (everyone else is ruining it, right?).
Maybe times are tough.. gotta knock down the competition. But, I am not competition to you, John, and I am not "in partnership" with Judy D. I might talk to Judy M once a year, if that. If I have one litter a year, is that too much competition for you? Then you'd better go back to breeding / selling birds.
If you will remember, John, you were the one who came to ME, looking for information, several years ago. You are a first class brain picker.. not that there's anything wrong with that, but give some credit where credit is due.

No one said anything about taking food directly from trash, but it could be done, if it was prepped right. Where do you think your dog food is coming from, already? How do you think that all the feral dogs in Mexico and other underdeveloped nations like India make it? They have dog overpopulation problems, fueled by trash. The dogs hang around the dumps. Is this news? Doh?
This is all without the benefit of any refrigeration and preparation of the food.. just rotting garbage. Now, THAT is dangerous for dogs, but overall, they survive by it.
John, et al..
Naturally, it seems you have an agenda.. everything I say is criticized. How about taking freezer burned food that is perfectly healthy but might taste a little bit off.. or a pint of sour cream that has been refrigerated and has a dime sized spot of mold on it? How about some tortillas that are starting to crumble? All of this is perfectly healthy. We could eat it.. We just don't WANT to. Why throw it out? This is all I was talking about.
However.. It happens that I have worked around the stockyards and meat packing plants in the past, and believe me.. They render down some perfectly disgusting stuff that would literally make most people retch.. hurl cookies! They take this and make all kinds of stuff, including gelatin desert (made from rotting cattle hides and hooves) and pet food. And yes, it's in the high priced dog food that you are buying at the store. Look at the ingredients.. "meat and bone meal". Uh.. What KIND of meat? Well, let me put it another way.. One of the rendering plants out here takes euthanized / dead pets.. dogs and cats, mostly. This is where MY dogs went.. the ones that didn't make it out of that hell hole dog 'pound. I got a lot of them out, but some didn't make it. So much for "rescue". LOL.. There's lots of documented evidence on this disgusting practice of feeding pets to pets as "meat and bone meal"...
And you want to talk to ME, about feeding leftovers? Give me a freakin' break!!!
And, you animal rights activists out there.. Did you know that "Best Friends" in Utah just happens to be located very near to a BIG animal carcass rendering plant, out there in the middle of nowhere? With railroad tracks and a major highway connecting them to all parts of the country. I'm sorry.. I don't believe that ANY "rescue" is able to place THOUSANDS of animals every year.. LOL.. Connect the dots, people!

Zdog.. Be grateful that you have a brain. Most of these people either don't have one or never learned to use it.

I happen to have visited that part of Utah and was curious about the area. This is how I found out about the rendering plant and I actually saw a Best Friends panel truck out there.
