Phil Behun

by Phil Behun on 06 July 2010 - 17:07

Well the 4th of July has come and gone and I hope that everyone had a safe and happy one.  I myself enjoyed the dulcet tones of Sammy Hagar at the Naperville Ribfest with the wife and a good friend.  But I digress, as I had informed the people who had contributed to the "Johannes and Friends" fund, if I hadn't received the required amount by 30 June, I would return all monies sent, I now tell all interested, the money will be returned.

It appears that only 1 person besides myself was remotely interested in filing a protest against Johannes and his tactics and negligence at the 2010 Sieger Show.  That individual is concerned with the fallout effect it may have on their recent first time USCA membership.  That I can understand.  I did receive contributions from 5 people totaling $160, and I thank them for their efforts.  As most of you know, I do not own a German Shepherd but rather my breed is the Belgian Malinois.  My interest lies in equitable treatment for all involved in dog sport and promotion and preservation of working breeds.  It has become apparent to me that the hierarchy, and too many of the membership, are not concerned with the betterment of the German Shepherd but more with personal agenda.  If no one involved with the breed or one of the organizations that "supposedly" champions the breed, will step forward in an effort to right the wrongs, I will not either.  As both of the dominant working organizations charged with the "preservation" of the breed seem in turmoil, I see no one stepping forward in the name of change,,,,,,,,except maybe Dr. Helmut Raiser.  If the "work" that I witnessed at this year's, and last for that matter, Sieger Shows is reflective of the future of German Shepherd, it's a sorry state of affairs and people like Johannes Grewe and Lyle Roetemeyer should be punished for their (or lack thereof) efforts.  I leave it to you, I only hope that my chosen breed does not suffer the same fate.

Some people are all talk.  I guess keeping in with the power crowd and not jeopordizing their chances to "win" is more important.

No, I don't show and never will.  No, I don't do any dog sports and never will.
And contrary to some people's thoughts, that doesn't mean I am not entitled to an opinion about what I see
happening to the GSD.

It's a shame, Phil. I for one have totally lost interest in Sch, partly as a result of the assholes at UScA. None of the new candidates seem any better, either. So to hell with them all. Don't see why I (one of the contributors and not even a Sch person) should carry the ball for the idiots who couldn't care less about their own breed. Don't knock your head against the wall, Phil, because none of them are worth the effort.

and what fate is that Phil......? I have had Malinois and the show ring version is in as bad a shape as the German Shepherd. Johannes is not the Sieger Show. Just an individual who has his name attached to a bad amendment....the problem with any organization is usually the apathy of the members:-)

I'm curious, do you breed?

I don't own GSD and as someone VERY concerned with the future of ALL purebred dogs at this critical period in their history, I, too am concerned about how the GSD survives. I'm concerned about the survival of ALL purebreds, as I stated.  I ask about the breeding only because I strongly feel that a breeder MUST do *something* to prove their dogs worthy of breeding.  The GSD people have the standard and the breeding suitability tests designed by v. Stephanitz and company.  Many breeds are not that lucky, like my own.  We have to struggle to come up with something to keep our breed true to form.  Many breeds struggle with this problem.  I'm not one for conformation shows, but at least people who breed for show wins are getting their dogs out there and getting them evaluated against others (even if the standard is not being applied at this time).

My hat goes off to EVERY SINGLE person who puts up with the drama and everything else to put their dog out in the public eye in some type of competition to prove some type of breed worthiness.  It's important!

I agree that the AKC version of the Malinois is a pathetic representation of the breed and claim no connection to the ABMC or it's beliefs.

The Sieger Show was about Johannes and his "stamp" on the breed and organization,,,,,,,he was the judge responsible for the "Working Class Males" and bestowed the rating of VA1 on a dog with suspect temperament and poor conditioning/structure.  I have personally witnessed dogs dismissed from the show ring (working type and AKC) for displaying aggression towards other dogs or people and this dog did both,,,,,,at a National Championship event.  The National Breed Warden was in attendance and did nothing as well.  Why????  You cannot defend it.

Member Apathy? When a high ranking member of the usca dog world takes his dog on the field with an e-collar and suffers no punishment even though several witnessed the violation we must assume the wolfs are in controll of the chicken coup!Power corrupts and in this situation absolute power corrupts absolutely! And I will assume that 900.00 dollars is a prohibbitting factor when it comes to filing charges?Or is it 600.00?

I would have been glad to support it but 1) I was not at the show and 2) I am no longer a member of USA (both of which resulting from the JA).

Original checks have been mailed to their respective donors via the USPS.  You should receive them in about a month or so, that is unless the Postal Service has gone back to riding horses, in which case you should have them by tomorrow.

Guys...to condemn a whole organization or breed over a dog placement or amendment is quite ridiculous.  To blame Johannes for the demise of the breed is even more so.
