Bob-O

by Bob-O on 03 July 2010 - 14:07

Those who know me well are aware that I am a very politically-active individual who spends much time in communication with local, State, and Federal legislators concerning topics that I take very seriously. Namely, I work mostly on items to reinforce 2nd Amendment rights, improve motorcyclists' rights and safety, and work on any other legislative actions apropos personal freedoms & fiscal responsibility.

We know the history of the H.S.U.S.; and we know they de-evolved to become an organization whose activists are hell-bent to prevent any animal from being someone's property or livelihood.

Those who open this link may think it comes from a strange source regarding the subject matter - the N.R.A. - I.L.A.. But do know that the N.R.A. - I.L.A. represents hunters and other sportsmen just as much as they represent sportsmen and enthusiasts such as me - the riflemen and handgunners.

The North Carolina Senate Bill known as S 460 Commercial Dog Breeder Regulation http://www.nraila.org/Legislation/Read.aspx?id=5940 is not a bad piece of work as written. While language in the Bill is directed at the scumbags we know as puppy millers; this open platform has room to gather amendments as it moves through committee(s). That is where the danger lies. With this platform the H.S.U.S. can lobby to  add, strike, delete any language in order to promote the H.S.U.S. agendum.

Normally, it is not effective to contact State legislators unless one is a resident of that State. In this case; this regards the breeders, hunters, and other sportsmen who are residents of North Carolina. But I know there are those who travel to North Carolina to trial and train, and those who plan to buy puppies from some of the excellent breeders who live there. I will not go into all of the fine points that I consider important when discussing legislation with lawmakers, but I will say this: North Carolina dog enthusiasts must must mobilize and make their voices heard so that this Bill is either passed as written (without changes/additions/deletions) or defeated.

Best Regards,
Bob-O

Thanks, Bob! There are a lot of good breeders and dog enthusiasts in the state.

I'm glad to see that you have some concerns, Bob-O, and you should, for more reasons than the very good ones you've given. These things often sound so good on paper and end up being so bad in the real translation. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but many years ago I voted for one of these "feel good" environmental protection laws, and it sure sounded good on paper, but ended up being sunsetted in a special session, after the law was used to shake down small businesses by the Trevor Law Group (do a Google search).

You cannot solve all the world's problems (especially social and economic problems) by passing more laws. You can get yourself so tangled up in limitations that it's impossible to do anything, anymore.

Here is the problem that most people are unable to see, and why these laws do get passed, often with disastrous results. The problems are too many to list and would require a lengthly discussion, which few people have the interest to follow.

Your "scumbag puppymill" reference is a good part of the problem. You may be unwilling to defend commercial, large volume breeders, because you don't agree with their husbandry practices or breeding goals. Possibly you are afraid to express any reservations, directly. Love them or hate them, the fate of commercial breeders is relevant to the fate of everyone else. When you consent to have them legislated out of existence, or to force husbandry practices upon them, you risk that same legislation being used against you and your chosen community, some time down the road. Laws can also be added onto AFTER they are written, and political pressure can be made upon the courts to decide things the way that special interest groups would like. They need and want favorable case law.. precedents, that is, which direct how subsequent and arguably similar cases will proceed.

Think about it.. If you are unwilling (lacking the courage or foresight?) to defend commercial breeders on a public forum, or have bought into the perjorative "puppymill" rhetoric, then why is a judge (who is a human being, and sensitive to public opinion if he is elected) going to do differently, when his decision is going to be watched? `

Nothing to worry about. As long as you can live by the same rules you'd have for everyone else, you'll be OK.

Thanks Bob

The same thing is happening in Ohio. The state passed a referendum by popular vote that set up a board to control for animal containment and breeding facilities for cattle and hogs that had the breadth of language to cover all animal breeding and care facilities. The law was passed to provide for the humane treatment and adequate care of animals which no one has a complaint about. The people on this board were to be everything from professionals to farmers, as written it was a nice blend fr a board of this type.

The HSUS threatened to sue and tie the legislation up in court while it placed a  special issue on the November ballot to control the direction of the previous bill to their liking. Our Governor bowed down to them this week stating that by doing so he was avoiding a costly court battle estimated at $10mm.

People in Ohio really need some help to get a handle on this legislation before HSUS (take the H & U out of that and what do you have?) controls the whole damn thing here too.

Ms. Janet Bartmess, a.k.a. DDR-DSH; you are a convicted dog abuser who was long ago outed on this messageboard. Why in hell you visit this particular thread I started and then add your comments is beyond me. Are you so overcome with guilt (after all these years) that you cannot let it go; or are you still in a state of self-imposed denial? Have you no shame?

I sincerely do not appreciate a person of your past flawed character and behaviour making comments anywhere on this messageboard, and I don't think anyone else here does either. I thought long and hard about even making this comment regarding your posts; but I think everyone must know who is the person known as DDR-DSH - lest they forget or are new to the messageboard.

So; would you please go away; and stop posting comments on any thread - especially the ones regarding the inhumane treatment of dogs? Is that too much to ask?

Sincerely,
Bob-O
