Hi All!

I am wondering if any of you have used a kelp supplement with any of your females to help reproduction? I have a female who only conceives very small litters, 1 pup and 3 pups and I was reading that kelp helps reproduction issues and increases males sperm count. I am wondering if any of you have tried it and found a difference. Thanks!

I don't believe Kelp would do much for reproduction.

Nor would I want to artificially, or chemically alter that natural process.

Selecting strong healthy animals is important.

Beyond any problem with the animals one might look at their breeding techniques.

Never considered supplements or drugs of any kind.

Well, I just purchased some Wholistic Sea Blend from K9 Power to try. It has other benefits as well as claiming to improve the conception rate so I figured it was worth a try.  Yes moon, I do agree that you need to have healthy animals to start with which my girl is but I dont see the harm of maybe adding a mineral that she is not getting enough. The times she has been bred she was very willing and the progesterone tests gave the correct time to breed yet she still produced very few pups. The pups were very healthy and she was a great mother. I was just trying to see if anyone who had a female that did not cycle normally or conceived small litters had tried this and found a difference as kelp is found to help with both of those issues.

used kelp once in the form of a product called 'concept-a-bitch' ( no longer avail).  had 13 pups!  way too many;  1 was stillborn but all others were healthy, avg weight 1 lb.  would not do this again.

Concept-a-bitch didn't do squat for my dog.

Nupro silver is a good kelp based supplement, I think. I loved how my dogs looked on it.

I've had bitches that had large litters consistently and bitches that didn't.
All things the same, no difference.

Perhaps it is your technique, or as I believe it's the bitch herself.

Do you always use the same stud?

What do you believe is in the Kelp supplement that the dog's not getting enough of?

I also believe part of reproduction is environmental.

It's certainly a proven fact in nature.

KCzaja - you said you like the way they looked - did using kelp change the dogs coat or color?

I ask because now that kelp is available in the stores again I started adding it into my raw mix.
