I got 2 lab pups on feb. 5, 2010...they are almost 6 months old---I've had the since they were 6 wks old.
Ithey are papered, and I paid $500 each for them.  I practically rescued them, however, as they were living in a pile of mud.
they have been sick with coccidia, giardia, since Feb. 5.  They've been on 3 panacur treatments, 4 albon treatments, 2 flagyl treatments, and SMZ TMP.  We have not gone 1 week between medicines without diarrhea, in Andy mostly.  Jack seems to have a stronger constitution.
I am so frustrated.  I have quit 2 vets, who have charged me an arm and a leg, and tonight at 1:47 A.M.  i awoke to andy's explosive diarrhea again...only 5 days off of SMZ TMP.  I am at my wits, and wallet's end.  Do you have any ideas?  I live on 7 level, fenced acres.  I clean up all poop every morning, during our walk, and with the diarrhea, in the field, I clean as best as I can and bring a spray bleach bottle with me for the residual.
thanks

if it is Coccidia, there is a good drug to try called ponazuril that works very well, bactrim is good too.

albon does not work well anymore as they are becoming resitant  to it.

I feel your frustration....the only thing I can add is that coccidia never dies. I know you have seven acres, but try to keep them away from the area they have gone in previously.....go out with them and train them to poop in a specific area.... if the fecals are coming up positive, you have to find what will work for that strain. Be diligent....this is precisely what happens in animals and humans with the overuse of abx therapy...the bugs get smarter than us....good luck!

Are the tests still coming back positive for both? One of my girls got coccidia when I got her and one round of panacur and a round of Albon cleared her (and I have a small back yard so it was easy to spray bleach everywhere)
I wonder too if maybe it the diarrhea is related to something else. Possibly diet related? I noticed my girl seemed to do a lot better as soon as I switched her to a raw diet, but it's certainly not for everyone or every dog. I have an adult male that used to get the runs once a month no matter what brand of kibble I fed him (yes I did keep him on each long enough that he should have been fully adjusted)
Good luck, I hope they get better soon. Also are they having trouble keeping weight on?

Do you have wild fowl on your property that could be reinfecting the dogs as they walk around? Not sure where you live or if that is even a consideration. But I know ducks are carriers so an option if you live in areas where they are prevelant.

EPI could be a consideration. Are they able to maintain body weight? If not you can test for that.

I would think by now any of the good flora so necessary for intestine health is long gone. If the dogs do not test positive for coccidia or any other bug then you need to replace the bacteria in the intestines or overgrowth will continue to be a problem. You could feed pre and pro biotics to quickly regrow the flora and feed something that digests quickly and doesnt sit in the body too long and eat up what little flora you have. Digestive enzymes will work or feed raw.

Its hard living with dogs that are sick ALL THE TIME and you really dont know why. I have one right now that is sick and I dont know how to treat him. It wears on you and Im so tired of dealing with his illness I sometimes want to give up and Im going broke in the process. Good luck!

If you know it's coccidia (and not also something else, such as giardia), then I second the recommendation for ponazuril, often found in a horse product called Marquis. Another product to look for is Baycox. These are different from albon and act differently on the coccidia micro-organism. It's a lot pricier than Albon, but maybe in this case will be more effective. What I was told was: "You can also get the active ingredient compounded with a beef-flavored paste (need your vet to call them with a prescription): Road Runner Pharmacy 877-518-4589. I think they’re about $75 for a 2-oz dose."

Usually, but not always, puppies get coccidia from their mother's feces. This is true even of the most conscientious, diligent breeders out there. I have never heard of some of the newer drugs mentioned, but if you are sure it is coccidia, then I would give them a try. However, I sometimes like to a take a less drastic approach, and then resort to the big guns if necessary. I have used a product for years called "Nzymes Oxy-Drops"... It is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral and it is safe to put in water or on food. The web site is www.nzymes.com and it might be a possible alternative before resorting to potent pharmaceuticals. They also have a product called Pet Tabs that I have also used with success... And this is by no means an endorsement for this comany.

pronazil works very well , i have use it before, you dont need much and only a few times use and it gone, this drug kills the coccida.. but you could also have some thing else going on with your pups. i will also say that coccida does not alway come from the mother, its when the puppies gets stress that brings it on. i know cause my females have never had it,, you can also try ammonia on the areas where the pups goes, as bleach does not kill coccida.. i would think at 6 months it may not be coccida as the puppies bodies should of fight it off by now. heres a link to look at about coccida. http://www.crbeagles.com/misc/coccidia.htm hope this helps bea
