I have had several litters of puppies.  I always like to be present when the female is delivering her puppies.  I wait about 1/2 hour after she seems to have delivered her last pup.  Then I inject her with pitocin intra muscularly to get her uterus contracting to clean out any debris that may have been left behing in her uterus.  I've never had a problem doing it that way.  If I were going to check her for puppies before whelping, I would prefer ultra sound.  That is what they use on humans.

I do ultra sound at 7 weeks I feel this is better than x ray and safer

I will never do an ultra sound at 7 weeks again. They told me 5 puppies and we got 13. Utterly pointless.

VM I am with you, I did an ultrasound at 5 weeks - showed 6 puppies.  X-rayed at 8 1/2 weeks and showed 6 maybe 7 so vets estimate was 6 - 8.  We ended up with 13 puppies, the last 4 would have had a shorter trip if they had crawled out her mouth.

I did an X-Ray on my female and the vet said 12...well she has 12.  Ended up with 11 live and 1 still born

If humans are not supposed to get x-rays when pregnant is it safe for dogs?  I have no idea, just asking.

by VomMarischal on 07 June 2010 - 14:06

I have a question too. How come these x-rays are spot on sometimes and not others? Is it the vet him/herself? Not positioning or reading xrays well? Or is it how the bitch holds the puppies???
