So my oldest female, a Husky, has been in heat for 13 days.   The last heat that we bred her, by doing progesterone testing she was ready to be bred the 11th day.  During that heat cycle the males did not mind eating, even if I had to have them outside away from the area completely they would eat out there.  This time however, one of my males is not wanting to eat at all, regardless of where we are at.  His brain is out the door lol,  but anyway.....should I even worry about it? He ate a little bit yesterday, but none today.  I know fairly soon she will be done with her cycle, and the craziness will be over.  My younger male Husky has matured a lot since then, though he still eats.   Have any of your guys dogs gone without eating through the cycle, and if so how long?  No "pack walks" for me until she's done.  Usually I walk the whole pack together, but as of this week I've been doing separate, short walks with each one.

If the male dog was well fed and healthy before he stopped eating I'm sure he can manage without or with less food for some days. I wouldn't worry too much if his overall health is good, I have never heard of a healthy love-sick male dog starving himself to death during a female's heat  when food was offered.

CANINE DOES NOT LIVE BY KIBBLE AND RAW ALONE

Our beloved dog Drago, had (past tense) refrained from eating once for 5 days, while a female was in season....
We had to practically "force feed" him at that time.
He always went on a starvation kick, when the "girls" were due for breeding.......
Stud dogs can be a real pain in the butt sometimes...

"Stud dogs can be a real pain in the butt sometimes..."

lol.  Hopefully he won't go that long.   I too had one named Drago, though he had eaten a tomato plant the night before my brothers wedding a couple of years ago.  Little to my knowledge did I know that they were toxic, he had eaten so much he was already dying when I got home the next night.   I've never had a bond that strong with a dog before

It's a noble name, for very special "partners".....usually once in a lifetime.
RIP both Drago boys...

A male dog can be severely distracted when a bitch is in heat. I have observed them go without food, and water as well. The food issue never bothered me, but the water issue did. I usually took them to a private place and presented them with water. If they did not volunteer to drink it on their own - out came the turkey baster. I would hold up their head and carefully give them some water.

The male dog will eat when he is hungry. If he will drink; just make him a goat's milk soup and keep it on the rich side. There is much good nutritrion in that type of milk. Also, I would give him the treat that is never turned away - sardines. He will be fine - he will just be a royal pain until it is over.

Best Regards,
Bob-O

Bob-O he is at least drinking.  I thought it was just plain funny at one point though.   My dogs all live in our basement, in kennels in there if a dog is in heat....however, I took him outside by himself, he just ran around the house time after time looking for her......he got a little out of breath.....stopped, drank, and looked again and then went to the door.  He was so anxious, so determined to get in to go to her.  I'll be so glad when shes through.  I'm about to try feeding, I'll let you know how it goes.  If that doesn't work, I'll try it at my friends house a few houses down the road.
