I had help training my girl to move out for her first show.  Get someone to run in front of you with a ball or favorite toy.  While you are running behind them, encourage your dog to "trot" or "go get 'im".  Start with just short jogs until the dog understands he is to move out and try to get the toy.  Reward him with the toy as soon as he moves from the heel position and actually pulls on the lead.  I also practiced in my back yard on a long line telling her to trot while she ran around me in a large circle.  You will have to snap the lead whenever he breaks into a gallop or run or if you noticing he is pacing not trotting.  It takes a bit of time for them to figure out it's ok to lead you around by the leash, especially if you have been working on heeling.  (We stopped all heeling exercises until after the show so she would not be confused.)  I hope you have a lot of stamina to take this on or have friends who do.  You will be winded trying to keep up with a GSD who is moving out.  Be patient, he will figure it out and will look beautiful trotting around the ring.  A lot of people, me included use people outside the ring to keep them focused with ears up and looking sharp.  If you train him long enough, he won't need anyone to make him run, he will do it naturally when you ask him to trot.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

You can also do it on your own with no one to call your dog as I did with a pup I raised to show for a breeder.Hw won 3 out of 4 shows we took him to and the German handler loved him and how well he showed even with no one calling him.(double handling) I PMed you.If you have questions let me know.I was in a rush when i was typing it.lol
