I was a moderator of a board before. (computer tech)
It got to the point where I had emails all the time over petty disputes.
I had to be there all the time.
If I took time off or went on vacation things got out of control.
I found it was consuming very much of my time. (what about friends - family - dogs?)
It was fun at first, but the more you do -  more is expected.
Did I mention piles of emails?

I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Hey, Lee...I'm pretty sure I was on that board but wasn't sending you tons of emails.  Maybe I was the cause of them?

LOL......

I would throw my hat in the running but I would not do much as a moderator.

Besides, anyone who actually has a life wouldn't have the time..lol

You guys couldn't agree on what color socks to wear much less be a fair and impartial moderator.

What you need is a robot with a rule book, and then the board would be so dry and boring no one would even bother to post anything except the idiots crying for help.

I'd rather hang myself from a tree than live under those conditions.

Just keep hitting that abuse button...lol

Oli has a special place here, wipe your feet and take your trash with you when you leave.

Say your prayers and don't forget to brush your teeth.

And try not to whine all the time.

Moons.

I am a member of an all breed working dog forum.  Even though some of the mods are against things like tables and ecollars, some are RAW feeders and others not, (just examples)  the only reason threads are ever locked is if a thread becomes  a back & forth personal attack flame war, or if politics, or religion is brought up.  Very cut and dried, I have been a member of that forum since it's inception 4 years ago, and I have never seen a thread locked because of someone's opinion, only bad behaviour.  The people who are banned are those who repeatedly break the rules or purposely start multiple  flame wars or purposely sabotage threads in order to get them locked.  These people are banned for a number of days to start with (time outs), the punishment gets consecutively more severe, much like what Tess described.  I think it's a really good idea.

How many times has this been discussed?

How many forget their involvement in these threads that are so offensive?

Selective memories some have.

The hypocrisy is so rich.

My memory is poor, so I keep notes...lol

Who has a stone in their hand ready to throw?

As old as time it is.

All anyone needs to know about whether Oli wants people to post political/religious threads is that he has deleted them en masse on more than one occasion.

This isn't exactly rocket science, folks, yet the same people keep on doing it. And if the repeat offenders can't exercise self-control, they need to be sent elsewhere - it's not like any of them have anything valuable to bring to the site in terms of dog training, animal husbandry, breeder ethics, dog deals etc. anyway.

Oli -- Is it possible to Fix the Registration Profile so that once a person registers on the Forum and picks a User Name, it then becomes permanent.    The "sock puppet" that the person is currently using will become that person's Permanent User Name -- no re-do for changing User Name.

Keith
if a Liberian asks someone to keep quiet they are not a control freak, though out time libraries have been a place to read and have quiet and that is the rules of joining such a place
It is not controlling anyone when they sign up on the dotted line and know to keep the voice down before they join
I think it only common courtesy towards others to do so
However i have been known to make a clatter myself if i am in such a mood or just for devilment i like to see the looks of horror on the faces of the other people, But then i have always had a twisted sense of humour

Or even better, require anyone registering to use their real name on the Forum, with no made-up user names.

I bet you'd be the first one to second that notion, wouldn't you MaggieMae?  Since you're all about full disclosure and whatnot.
