Using her definition, a librarian asking someone unruly to be quiet is a control freak.

Ohhh please. Moderators always take sides, even in dog training. IE: anti-E-Collar, anti-Koehler, anti-Cesar Millan, anti-tails docked .. the list goes on. Look @ the show vs. working threads ... nuff said.

These forums are perfect as is.

Actually, this is the first forum I've even been to that allows Koehler to even be mentioned in a high regard without someone being pointed as a dog abuser. And by the looks of it, E-Collar neutral as well. I like reading open discussions like these.

As for Politics, well, hate me today, hate me tomorrow.  LMAO

Great works Oli !!

Melissa.

The only good mod would be one that cut out the bashing and back and forth childish crap and the major cussing sprees. No deleting posts because a mod doesn't agree with an opinion. We should be free to discuss our views even if others don't agree but try to keep it respectful, non political, non religious.

Tess,

Stop wasting your time and energy.   You are absolutely correct in your observation.  It is very revealing, isn't it?  What can be so very difficult about simply complying with the TOS is beyond me--like quantum physics.  But, apparently complying is like understanding quantum physics to some others.   So, leave it alone--it's a waste of energy trying to explain it.  It is much like teaching a pig to sing (or reason):  frustrates you and annoys the pig.
I rather like the idea of a police officer (Slambunc) being a moderator.

"
Quote:"or better yet maggie ban all people who come here to talk anything but dogs."

YES YES YES!! Simplest and best solution, to report those who violate the TOS. First offense, a warning. Second offense, banned for 3 days, third offense, banned for 2 weeks. Still don't get the message? Permanent removal. Doesn't matter who's "side" of views you're on, rules apply to ALL.

I'm familiar with boards that have rules like those above, and it has made the boards terrific discussion places and gotten rid of the trolls. People certainly disagree and argue, but it's not vile."

Definitely!!   That would eliminate a lot.   However, as Keith pointed out, some of the miscreants on this board discovered proxies (not the real name, but I would like to avoid giving any "mischievious birds"  any ideas) long ago and those were used to get around the ISP issue.

"Moderators always take sides, even in dog training. IE: anti-E-Collar, anti-Koehler, anti-Cesar Millan, anti-tails docked .. the list goes on. Look @ the show vs. working threads ... nuff said."

Then that's not the Mod you want.  Yes, a Mod can join a thread and state their personal viewpoints, thereby acting as a regular member of the board.  No problem.  But the Mod MUST act as Moderator totally unbiased, which is easily done and Moderators do it constantly all over the internet.  The Moderators job is to warn off those that use foul language, post porn, attack others personally (disagreeing with someone, even vehemently-is fine, you just don't swear at them or call names), that post OT non-dog threads NO MATTER if they're Democrat or Republican, ALL OT threads simply get closed.  Period.

A Mod can't close a thread because it's pro-Cesar Milan if the Mod is anti.  There are plenty of terrific site Moderators out there helping to make msg. boards inviting, vibrant places for their chosen subjects.

Also, boards often appoint 2-3 Mods, since people can't be there all the time, and then the Moderators also serve as checks-and-balances on one another.

Oli can easily remove a Mod if they don't act in an unbiased manner.  I'd suggest appointing a Moderator on a trial basis.  If that Mod acts impartially, great.  If the Mod does not, get rid of them and appoint someone who will be fair.  Again, impartial Moderators are not hard to find.

Yeah!  What 4pack said.  You're exactly right.  This is definitely doable.
