Why so many long coats?  Seems everyone wants to dump them in the US?  Do other ountries not show long coats?  Are they not acceptable in other countries?  Pisses me off that people want to dump them in the US; and of course people here will buy them and breed them.  Is that where we want these long coats to be?

They might be great if you live in a place that always is cold. They are pretty...not my cup o tea but look at all the other crap that Americans have taken in and done to breeds....the "designer" breeds!!!! I think I saw an ad for a Shepherd poodle!!! WHAT IS UP WITH THAT? I can deal with a long coated pure breed GSD before a Shep-a-poo!!!

Long Coats.........personaly love them to bits, think its all down to the kennel club, wether in the USA  or the UK. Just does not fit the snobs, think they have forgotten what German Shephards looked like origonally.

Why do you think a long coat would do better in a cold climate?

by SitasMom on 13 January 2010 - 16:01

Sita is a long coat and she does well in Houston, better then our extremely short coated Great Dane mix. All that hair seems to insulate them against heat and cold. All that hair also stays wet for a very long time. A wet cold dog can cause hardship.

She is long coat with undercoat

That's my point, UNDERCOAT.  Just because a dog has a long coat, doesn't mean it's warm and toasty under there.

Yes, they are acceptable in other countries and will soon start to show in their own category I believe, under SV and FCI regulations. Nearly all the ones I have seen do have an undercoat.

Good, maybe then if approved to show they will quit trying to dump them off here.

Odd, 'cuz I think everyone that I have seen over the years did not have one.

Phil, it actually seems odd to me that the long coats you've seen didn't have undercoats. Some of the long coats I've seen, even ones currently for sale, look Terv-like.  Btw, all of the Belgian Shepherd breeds/varieties have a double coat.
