is there a GPS MICROCHIP out in the market yet? - Page 1

a GPS IMPLANTABLE MICROCHIP, not a collar which are useless and expensive.

I m looking strictly for implantable microchip WITH GPS locator in them.   If they can put them in phones, then
they can make them small enough for chips.  But i cant locate a mfg sofar for them.  

A collar is ok however, I believe that with a stolen dog a thief is likely to catch on that the collar
has a GPS and takes it off & destroys it.  

Good question.  The technology should be there, however the price point at this time would probably stop production.  That is my guess.

the only problem with that is how are you going to power it as gps needs a lot of power , take a mobile phone you would only get a couple of hours if you lucky using gps , so inplanting it into a dog just wont work

bigtoddy is right. I've been in the field of high-tech and perfect is the enemy of good. While we're all waiting for the ideal solution, can someone please post a list of collars with GPS that are available today?
And what are the practical difficulties in using them if anyone has experience using them? thanks

I'm wondering why a GPS fits in a small phone and couldn't be part of the chip.   Nowadays with our technology this should not be a problem.  The GPS is not what requires the power, the whole phone does for using talk or internet time.  The GPS is just a tiny piece of software which can be powered on or off in most phones. 

It doesn t need to be on all the times, merely if a dog is missing.  With all the apps the phones we have nowadays it should be traceable without help from some 'authority' or subscription which is what Dogtracs requires a yearly subscribtion for.   That is a royal ripoff. 

There is some crazy GPS application now which allows people to connect immediately telling their location (a serial killers' dream come true) so there is no way they can't make a GPS component small enough to fit in a dog microchip. 

I just bought 10 more chips but the company supplying it had not even heard of it when i asked them about this highly useful microchip idea.   yes how much is it worth per chip?   Well, I'd charge the client back, so I believe that if it doesnt exceed $100 per chip, they'd go for it, as long as there are no subscriptions attached to it.  

 the technology is not that advanced yet, this collar is so big and looks like it would fall off the dog

GPS implant would not only need a decent batt.  life but it would also need an antenna,  Trust me I have researched the hell out of GPS systems for dogs (among other things).  Someday, maybe they will stop caring about how they can make a t.v. paper thin and focus on more important things.
