I got my 12 week old GSD puppie yesturday (my first) and today took him to the vets, I was told he has a heart murmur. The vet never said how bad it was but said i could get a scan done if I want to. I was shocked and very annoyed with myself and the breeder. He was cheap only 200 pounds and i never asked the questions i should of. I never asked for vet check proof and I have no papers. Looking back now it seems like he made us go for this pup by saying the rest where taken. He knew I was not experienced and just after a companion. Im upset for my pup and im already attached to him. One thing is for sure and that is I am going to keep him no matter what.
What are the chances of him being ok? help on this topic would be great.

Also. He seems to eat then play for about five minutes then sleep or lie down. He always seems to be sleeping. Is this normal pup behaviour or is this the heart murmur effecting him?

I would echo Hodie!  Relax, it is not that big a deal in a young pup and a few months from now may well be GONE.   That was my experience with a wonderful male puppy who had a murmur at 12 weeks and at 5 months-nothing.  Frankly, it has been the same with ME, too!   I have had a murmur that showed up at 9, then disappeared until I was 23.  Then, disappeared never to be seen again.  Believe me, I have been scanned, poked  and studied a LOT in the last five years and no one ever found a murmur.

I do, however, have a copy of my EEG, proving that I have a  normal and fully-functioning brain, should anyone ever doubt it!!

Thankyou so much for replying i feel alot better. And I totaly agree with Hodie saying about doing the right thing when buying next time. It was pure neglect on my part but if i hadn't of been so stupid then i wouldn't have the wonderfull puppie I do now. Murmur or no murmur he's mine.

As for the breeder. I have just contacted him and he said he had a murmur but was lost at 8 weeks when the same vet checked. Now my vet has found it again. The breeder did thank me for letting him know so thats something.

"I got knocked out this week by a large chunk of ice falling off the roof. "

Dear god, woman; could you have worse luck?

Hodie,  will you stop getting hurt ! Between you and Steph :)  I am glad to hear GB is keeping his puppy, I am sure he will out grow it, if he is not turning blue do not worry.
Always,
Cee

Contact the breeder, tell them what's up. If this is a genetic defect, make sure you have the garantee in writing. Make sure the breeder will guarantee another puppy if this murmur developes into something worse.

stay calm about it - inform breeder in non confrontational way, just to let them know and then wait for a while and check again on auscultation.   A good vet seeing the pup at around 6 months will know the approximate depth of the problem, or even be able to tell you the problem has gone, it can be a little bit of stenosis from birth, babies get it, but it dissappears, also it could be a more congenital problem, and you will need the support of your breeder to get a good result in whatever way you want, and starting out a fight wont get that.  Informing he or she, and waiting will prove you are being very reasonable   Mo.
