i have had 4 shepherds in my life all of which came into heat around 6-12 months this one i currently have is 13 months and not had a cycle. and its getting to the point i have now started looking into inducing a heat, the reason i found this page.
i dont plan to induce til 18 months but if by 18 mo still no heat i need to find a way to be sure she has one.
but i do like the info on this page that told me alternative methods other than just chemical inductions. the increased fat and teaser males
i was told by a vet student from U of I that progesterone aka this PG600 is good for the dam is there any research it is bad for her in the case she does not come in in a timely fashion
i would just like to know she would come into heat so i can kinda predict breeding time when she is 24 or 30 months

I'm not involved in breeding and hadn't heard that a first heat could be so relatively late. Personally I think it's a great characteristic, and should be encouraged if it's genetic -- no babies making babies!

If your dog hasn't matured how do you know she is healthy, hips, eyes, temperament and so on.
What does her pedigree look like?
I would not induce a heat cycle period.
You should raise her up, train her, see how things go in time, have her x-rayed at two, see that she has no health issues before thinking about breeding her.
