Hi:  I really love this site, I have learned a lot about feeding, supplements, what works, what does not work, etc.

My question now is what do you all think about feeding an occasional RAW beef rib bone?  Supposedly it helps to whiten the teeth, but of course could help with dental tarter/plaque and has some extra calcium the dogs don't normally get.??

As long as it's not a cooked bone, it will be fine.  My dogs get raw femur and knuckle bones from the butcher.

When feeding leg bones and such, be careful as the marrow is sometimes too rich for some dogs.

The dogs will love raw beef rib bones... in fact we have to ration the time ol' Nelson has on them as he can get seriously in the zone and spend hours on them which also isn't  too good for them. Not sure what it is mind but suspect he's producing too much stomach acid - like us chewing gum for too long I suppose.

I remember once getting a complete leg bone for the hound & trying to crack it open to let him get at the marrow. Gawd those things are tough! I nearly disclocated my shoulder trying to crack it open with a lump hammer.

A little blob of marrow is also pretty good in your own stew as well - but stay out of polite company for a couple of hours afterwards mind...

I buy racks of ribs when they are on sale for less than $1lb. I cut them in sections of 2-3 ribs depending on the size/age of the dog and hand them out every couple of days when I have them. Whatever if left over of the bones the next morning gets thrown away before the bone dries out too much and gets hard/brittle.

Hey to the person that said bones are difficult to break up.....take them to a local butcher and have them saw them for you :) That's what ours does.

VonWal,

I realised that after I tried to break them.... experience is a wonderful thing!

It was just so funny looking back at it now & I was just amazed at how seriously tough they are.
