Hi my name is megan. I have a 7 year old male. He is a select Champion. We havent shown him for about 2 years in a point show. Hes more of a pet now. well in the past three months hes been going down on his pasturns well we took him off the concrete pen and let him out on the grass to get him up. well it didnt get any better. his left front leg where theres a joint between his paw and his leg looks like its broken but its not and its not dislocated.weve taken him to 3 different vets and have had blood work done on him. We took him to the university, a local vet that deals with small and large animals and one in the city. same answer every time, well i dont know. Hes not eating well either. I took him to the vet yesterday and he said the muscle in his shoulder blade is got an indent in it from loss of muscle or has never really been to much muscle there. then yesterday after the vets i found a bump on his left testicle. We've thought about getting splints for him and working with him outside or the vet give him steriod. but hes so used to the leg flopping around he just turns it under him. We have not a clue what is going on. hes on a healthy diet with chicken and purina... I am trying to find answers and no one can give a answer to me!!!!

Swim him, walk him gently, feed a QUALITY food, and don't leave the dog in a run.

Makes me think of EPM in horses, but I've never heard of something like this in dogs, sounds like it goes beyond normal exercize and diet issues.
Do you have any photos or video of the dog in this condition?

Have seen a ton of pastern issues in the Am. S/L. this is the first I have heard of a dog this age having problems.

If he were mine, I would put him on Glucosamine and in a run with several inches of sand as a flooring. This will provide comfort as well as strengthen muscles, but I.m betting there is another issue that hasn't been discovered yet.

Honestly, I have never seen pastern issues that were not hereditary and I doubt there is much that can be done for this issue.

Best wishes,

I can't offer much advice other than PLEASE swap his food. Purina = blech. That COULD explain some of the muscle and pastern issues as malnutrition can do horrible things to a dog. But I agree I don't think it is entirely diet/nutrition.

See this website. Most purina products are listed at 1 star. I would stick with 5 and 6 if at all possible.

Good luck to you and your dog. I hope he is ok.

I have to agree, try a better food, and vitamine mineral supplement. The sand is a really good idea too.
