There is no one dog and no one line that will be "best" at everything. If your preferences lie in dogs that actually "work" then considering who the siegers are is just a start. Read as many reputable commentaries on dogs you really like. Some of the top performance dogs may be lacking in drives and have bitework that is a bit lackluster. Other dogs may be firecrackers in SchH but have structure issues. You need to find a balance.

From a genetic standpoint, Zamp is one of the top dogs if you are looking for a good balance of qualities. He has produced a number of incredible dogs that are winners in their own right. So another consideration is to look at the quality of the offspring as well as the number high of quality offspring.

It's not enough just to consider the males. Females are a big part of the equation. If you already have a female you want to breed, you need to find the best male for her genetically and stressing the work qualities you want to see in the puppies. In general, it's not enough just to look at the sire. You need to see the dam's lines, and what she has been producing as she is half of the equation and will pass on her genetic endowments to varying degrees. The dam needs at least as much consideration as the sire, and should not simply be an afterthought.

One dog I like a lot from the standpoint of having good work qualities is Dux von Jabora from the Netherlands. The number of working titles he earned at a young age was admirable. He passed on his work-ability and stable, social character to his puppies. He was the seiger in Denmark and was V8 in the 2006 BSZS. At that time he was one of the top 10 studs in Germany but his time in the limelight was short. Unfortunately he was not handled well as a competition dog - and that is according to his breeder. So he basically seemed to disappear. I would have liked to have seen more from him as he was regarded as very promising in many respects. Genetically, it's difficult to say as he does not have the number of progeny to allow one to see his potential as a stud dog and as a genetic factor in the breed.

Read as much as you can, talk to people, and take things with a grain of salt. The most important this is to verify by crosschecking information from independent sources. You can't account for taste but history always bears witness to the truth.

"Grief v Lahntal" is "Greif zum Lahntal"   :-)

Here's a quick and dirty list of notable bloodlines worth studying.  The left column is of alltime best hip producers, and most are from workinglines.  The right column is corresponding bloodlines from strong working performers.

Greif zum Lahntal has what I consider two significant branches, one to Mink, one to Pike (or more, through significant dams like Mona von der Döllenwiese)...
