I would really love to know at what age everyone begins breeding their females? I know how earlier some do like a year old one lady does and I know how late I do <3 years> but i would love to know how early and maybe how many years before retire?

I don't breed mine until age 2, only after hips/e;bows OFA good or better, and retire my girls between 5 and 6 years of age. by then they have produced 3-5 litters. more than enough for me to pick one or more to replace them, and enough on my girls. I have 3 kids in 3 years, so I want to treat my dogs well, Not over breed them. never Back to Back and only one time per year, not every other cycle as my girls seem to cycle every 4 months. Just the way I do things.

thank you vomveiderheiss i forgot to mention I bred the rottweilers at 3 as they are so late to mature physically I felt the needed the extra time I am unfamiliar with breeding on the gSD but matched dates one a breeders site figuring up when they were bred at what age and was afraid 1 year and 1 1/2 was being done by many just because akc will register them.

as long as prilims are done on hips and the bitch is mature enough to have pups I have bred as young as year and half with good report from OFA before certifying. I have had a bitch raped at one year only to have one pup of half american which he went down the road to a good home and pup was placed nice pup indeed. you can breed early long as u know the hips are looking good and for 25 ofa can give a good opinion how they are going to cerfity the hips on your dog, have done that been there, and rely on it. If u have given excellent care of the bitch, supplement, exercise daily and love and attention she can reproduce to nine, my gillion's dam was sent to Germnay to va ghandi v arlette to be bred and is still like a pup at 11 years old not breeding any more of course. I think a decent age to retire a bitch u have used is 7 years old and let her live out her live with eldery people wanting a calm nice female spayed. Pat

LOL, I hope the rapist was arrested and incarcerated. And to think the puppy was half American....how absolutely horrifying.

omg dont you get it the dog can physically have pups it was your site i got the ages from BUT its not good for them that early? the female is still growing her hips are still changing she still needs all the nutrients for herself and not the pups!

by Michael10 on 26 July 2005 - 05:07

I have my dogs bred for the 1st time after they have received there schutzhund 1 title and koerung which is generally between 22 months of age and over.

Sheplovr, I cannot find any of your dogs on the OFA site. Why is that?

by vomveiderheiss on 26 July 2005 - 06:07

It is not good for them to have pups at that young of age, regardless what the OFA says on prelims. Females need to grow and develop, A female under 24-30 months is still like a human teenager, would you allow your 14 year old daughter have kids because she physically can? After 24-30 months you can judge when the female is ready, I had a female that was 4 before I decided to breed her and never regretted waiting that long, as she was not ready for pups until this age. Breeding early I think is wrong, but JMO. Even though my one girl now has 2 titles at almost 17 months I still won't breed her until she is at least 24 months. My other female is going to be 5 in one month, she is to have one more litter and then be retired. We all do things differently. So to each his own. Good night (((****))))
