Looks like this dog has plenty of red, would a very dark black and tan/red be the way to go. Maybe a melanistc black and tan/red???

If looking to improve pigmentation breed to a very well structured black dog, this will result in very deep blk/red puppies with dark black saddles, unless your female carries the black recessive you will not have black puppies. Your female is blk/red, but her pigment is very weak.

black may improve and enlarge the black saddle and mask, but will not improve the red pigment.

For starters, this the whole picture has a slight yellow tint, I am correct in assuming it was taken toward the end of the day? The closer to sunset the more of a yellow then orange tint will be cast on your photo. Colors can be misleading in photos.
First, how old is the bitch? It is not uncommon at all for a saddle to fade with time. But if you want better pigment, yes, go with a dog with deep black mask, saddle, dark eyes, black nails. Don't forget color is just the icing on the cake. I love a dog with great color, but only when all the other pieces fit first. Lovely bitch, good luck.

Molly,
Red is actually related to fading pigment so you do not want to select for the red.
I would suggest a black sable to bring pigment back generally or a black and tan or bi color that had dark dark tan (and probably has dark sable in its pedigree).
If you can find a nice saddle backed male where the saddle is dark and extensive - start there and worry about the tan later. But also ask re fading pigment in the lines. Certain lines will start out with good pigment but by the time the dog or bitch is 5-7 years they are basically a red dog. This is a definite inherited tendency that certain dogs and lines carry.

from personal experience I would say one of the best bloodline to have black saddle is Cary Fiemereck's bloodline.
I have my 9 year old( a son of Cary's) who still has his pitch black saddle and reddish brown color.A very good friend of mine has quite a few Cary's progenies as well who still have an excellent black/brown pigmentation..
