What is the average age for retiring a Stud? Is the decision based on show performance alone or medical problems? Where do the retired Studs end up?

How many years can a male produce?

It's different for every dog. My stud retired at age 9. He was having prostate issues...instant cure = neuter. He could have been managed with medications and extended his breeding career, but I felt uncomfortable giving him drugs to control his problem. I sleep well at night knowing he's the healthiest, drug free, 10 year old dog he can be. I have successfully bred to dogs as old as age 12...a VA male. My own stud retired here. He's my baby. I have had older studs retire to comfortable family homes of well known people wanting the easy years that well trained GSDs have late in life. It's nicest when retiring dogs have a comfortable home life where they get gently worked on occassion. A 7 yr old, titled male at $2500 is a sound investment if the dog is healthy currently. He may produce well into his senior years. There are some natural supplements that may extend his reproductive years as well as overall quality of life? There are folks who frequent the board who know significantly more about these things than I...
