I have an 18month old american breed shepherd who has always been very fussy with his food.  If I put him on the better food he has very loose stools and have tried adding all kinds of differnt healthy stuff to get them formed.  If I keep him on the Pro Plan food he eats it sometimes not all the time and his stools are formed but now he has had anal problems.  We expressed them three times in a matter of a month ,he has had panalog right into the glands and now he is on an antibiotic for ten days.   Also he seems to be itching more than usual.

Any suggestions

Have you tried switching him to raw?

Proplan isn't the best food.  Try to find a food with less grains, and more meat for protein.   Remember if the first ingredient is chicken, that is at a wet weight, chicken meal is more preferable.    Lots of exercise helps too.

I had the same problem when feeding Nutro.  I wonder if some dogs are more prone to anal gland problems,  as I know of one breeder that feeds a high corn based food, dogs get little exercise and he has had no problems.

raw is best  or  taste of the wild works good for most of my dogs

Switch to either raw (best) or a 100% grain free kibble like Orijen or Taste of the Wild. The grains in most pet food are responsible for a myriad of problems, including itching and digestive problems. Continually expressing the anal glands can actually make the problem worse........ increase your dog's exercise  instead.

Dee,
How are you feeding?
Wet, dry, once a day, twice?  More?
Does the dog get exercise?
What kinds of things are you adding?
What time of day do you feed?  Hows the weather, hot?
What did your vet say?

My dogs get the runds from Taste of the Wild when I first feed it to them for about a week or so, then it hardens up.  In fact, any change of food can do it.

What are the runds exactly?  Did you see that word on the innernet?
