Are Belgian Malinois replacing German shepherds?

I was curious to what others think by the topic?

Where I live and the surrounding areas we have a pretty good amount of k9's and they're all Belgian Malinois?! Even in the big city it's Belgian Malinois. There is only one german shepherd who recently got imported from czech slovakia in a small department but that's about it, the rest is belgian malinois.

How does it look around your area with K9's in Police department? What kind of breed are they?

I think some of the departments who got the Malinois around here have gone back to the GSD - primarily Czech by all appearances..

Its b/c the trainers aren't as good. mals are easier to train, they come biting, chase anyone who runs. Shepherds are civil and better police dogs, because Mals are just prey monsters and don't think as much. Plus which would you rather live with if you were a handler in a dept where the dog goes home with you and your kids?

I like malinois better than shepherds in general, and i would rather own a mal or dutchie, but not for police work. Another good thing is that Mals tend to live and work longer and they are smaller sized.

I was really surprised because lately I've seeing them out of their patrol cars and they're basically all belgian malinois. I know for a fact the city has them.

Yes, one department got a sable dog from czech slovakia, he looked very good, around 80-85lbs. I think he just got training done with his partner and now are on patrol. They already used him to sniff out lockers at a pretty large school for drugs and other illegal substances.

In my county all they use and have ever used is german shepherds. I think they are more friendly with people. Little kids can come and pet them and theres no issues but when they are working they work. I think they have a better on/off switch.

You are right about the german shepherd and I agree with you. I can't really speak on the Belgian Malinois because I never owned one nor was I really into the breed. I know that they're very high drive and are very intense and crazy when training and working.

I also read some where that german shepherds are more prone to health problems than Belgian Malinois. What kind of health problems do Mal's have? if any?

Around my area - Southern United States - I see GSD in the police departments- I can't say I have seen alot of the Mal's..... I am partial to the GSD breed - but I have seen a couple of Mal's that I would give my right arm for - That is for a Schutzhund training perspective. A friend of mine calls them the whore dogs of the Schutzhund world - Easy, highdrive, and crazy.....Cant really say that I think that is a good receipe for a police dog. We have one at our club that is Awesome - I thought that all Mals would be classified that way - but saw some recently - that didn't compare - In Alabama - GSD al the way....

This area is GSDs and that's what they'll be sticking with, to my knowledge.

In my area of california, almost all surrounding departments use GSDs and the one department that uses a mal will often call out for a GSD to take care of situations rather than using their own dogs.
