I've followed several posts througout the past couple years about this food.

I decided to try it last September 08 and have been feeding it ever since. I've stayed with the Prairie blend for the past  4 months as they got tired of the other flavors.

Anyway, the gas this food causes with my dogs is horrible, or should I say even deadly. I can't take it any longer.

Has anyone else experience this flatulence in their dogs? They can clear a room and boy do they linger.

No longer can stand it.

i have posted before, but......
we didnot have good luck with TOTW either.  we gave it a fair trial, too.
at first, the dogs seemed to do okay with it, but like so many others,
after a few months, condition and coat went to hell, unexplained
diarrhea, some vomiting.  and yes, one female was bothered with
the bloating and gas.  we've fed TOTW, timberwolf, blue buffalo,
diamond extreme athlete, bil jac, natural balance, canidae, royal
canin, chicken soup, etc, etc, etc.  the same thing happens every
time - dogs do good for a while, then they all start going the other
way.  about a month or 6 wks ago we switched to iams protection
formula.  never in the world did i think we would ever feed iams.
i was getting desperate and running out of options.  it does not
contain menadione, but it does contain corn.  i have to say that
the dogs have continued to get better and better so far.  weight
seems stable, coats are beautiful, stools look great - no diarrhea,
and they all seem to like it.  yes, i am befuddled.  i would never
have believed it, but as long as it is working, wed will con tinue
to feed it.  so, i guess, whatever works.

I can't believe I'm reading this post.  My Male Corgi (12 yrs old) is having ALL the issues you both are having: loss of weight, muscle tone, gas, etc...  He did good for a bit but then wham...  Less than 1 yr ago he still looked like a pup, now he looks his age! :(
Where I buy my food, the owner advised maybe switching to the Bison or other meat source.  I take it you all didn't have much luck doing that?  I'm wondering if I should take him off it all together.

pjp,

My dogs don't do well on the "barley" based foods. They were actually doing better and looking really good on the Diamond Performance food which contains corn too.

I keep trying to stay away from these so called "low" quality foods but the dogs have done the best on them. I've tried every designer food out there and I'm at my wits end.

Can't do raw, don't have a big enough freezer, nor the money it costs to feed them the straight meat so that's out.

I was just wondering if anyone else was having any gas issues with this food.

Brandi,

I haven't noticed any issues with the coats, although they seem to be shedding out more often. I am took my cats of the TOTW as well. They don't really like it and their poop stinks on it too. Too many anal issues with this stuff.

I put the cats back on Evo and they love it and no more smell. I can't get the Evo for dogs here so I don't use it for the dogs just the cats.

Hmm, my Huskies thrive on TOTW.  Anubis my GSD pup is eating it, no gas or anything like that he's just ribby though.  I do feed the Salmon instead of what you're using though.

My other two Corgis are doing very good on Wellness.  You may want to try that.  And the one has been diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowl Desease, which usually dogs with this condition requeres Vet. prescribed food.  Another good food to try is Sensible Choice.  It is a good quality food at far price.  Also is California Natural.

The food game is just that, a game, of hit and miss.  I've had many dogs over the years and have gone through many diffierent foods.  I think TOTW is a great food.  Just over time, it is just not working well for my one dog.  I think I may try my Corgi on Sensible Choice senior.  It's worth a try.

And I'll add, our dogs are like us, some food don't agree with us humans, dogs are the same.  Myself for example have been eating cereal all my life and now, my system decided it doesn't like milk.  so, no more milk.  Dogs are the same.  Choosing a dog food is very overwhelming, even for me.  Glad to have ones like you all to converse with.

The fact that a dog has flatulence, to an excess, can be due to many causes. Much of the time it is diet related. But sometimes it is because of other issues, including some medical issue. One thing none of you mention is the consistency or color of the stool. That also can be a sign to help figure out what is going on. I have many, many GSDS, and NONE of them have this problem.

I have a few questions and suggestions for you to try. If none of these work, then try changing food, without corn, fillers, little or no ash and meat (not meat byproducts) as the first ingredient.

1. When was the last time the dog was wormed and checked for intestinal parasites?
2. Is the dog on any kind of medication?
3. Feed the dog less, and, if necessary, in smaller amounts more frequently.
4. Add some fresh yogurt daily to each meal
5. Add a product like Prozyme to the food. There is a Prozyme product too that is lactose free if milk products seem to make the gas worse.
6. Does the dog get treats or table scraps of any kind?
7. Does it eat anything when outside?

Try one of these suggestions at a time, and give the change at least a week to two weeks before changing anything else. There are also other suggestions I can make if you try these and it does not seem to help. It may be that your dog/s simply cannot digest what they are eating, or the bacteria in their gut is the wrong kind or the wrong kind is prevalent and overwhelming the other bacteria.
