NWilz

Ok, my dog I've been posting about has to take some supplements and he doesn't like that.  I tried everything to sneak everything in and no luck....then I took out my blender, threw in a chicken leg quarter (he LOVES chicken), ground the pills and mixed the powder with the raw chicken in a thick mix.  Absolute success, he devoured it!!!  But right as I was finishing up, my brand new blender made a little bang and fire flew.  Blender is now dead.  So anyone feeding raw trying something similar, grinding raw chicken into like a puree? I didn't start cooking until I got married (recently) so I don't know what I need.  I need something that can handle the bones, but still turn the pills into tiny pieces to sneak them in.  Do I need a blender?  A food processor?  Both?  My husband said to cut the chicken bones in smaller pieces and use a blender.  Well, where can you find a good knife that will cut chicken bone?  I mean, this is middle of no where Alabama, we have like WalMart and Kmart, do they sell a decent knife for chopping?  I grew up on fast food, I lived alone quite well on fast food, canned goods, and simple stuff. so all of this is way over my head. So help an idiot out, what do I need to make Apollo's mixture?  Is there a certain brand/type of food processor or blender I need to get?  Please help the clueless kitchen klutz. Thanks all, Nichole

Can you not wrap the pill in a piece of deli meat for him?  Thats what I do to get my bulldog to take a pill.

I actually use a strong pair of scissors to cut chicken.. its to much work to use a knife. I also use a different pair of scissors to cut herbs and lettuce. But make sure you use the dishwasher to sanitize them.  Ohh wait you live in alabama (i use to live in mobile)   well hopefully you have a dishwasher.

Good luck to you.  Its alot of fun to cook once you get the hang of it.

Wdozier, unfortunately this is a non negotiable type of dog, meat worked once, hot dog worked once, mixing with a little kibble and beef broth before I totally raw fed worked most of the time, cream cheese didn't work, peanut butter didn't work...peanut butter worked a while, I'd make him this ball of peanut butter with pills in it and stick it in his mouth, he outsmarted me.  Also had limited success with mixing his powder stuff with milk...he LOVES milk so that worked for a couple of days.  I think chicken and finely ground pills are going to be the trick.  He actually eats chicken pretty fast (he normally eats slow, smells every bite, etc) so this might work.

Scissors are a great idea!  I'll have to get some of those today.  All I have is like office scissors.  Haven't made it to the point of kitchen scissors yet.  And yes, have a shiny new dishwasher, couldn't live without it.  We'll see if cutting the chicken up works tonight, if not, another blender goes out the door...I really wish they didn't shoot that spark when they die....LOL.

Thanks for the tips,

Nichole

Don't use a leg quarter when grinding for a pill.  Use a boneless piece.  The leg bone is probably the problem.

believe it or not i cut chicken with regular sissors I bought from walmart. those big ugly ones your teacher use to have in school. I got the one with a blue handle just so it looks pretty. But i got it in the school supply section. It takes some force to break up some bones but you will find that with a little force you can possible do it. I am a small 120lb female so if I can do it you can too. But if you want more of an ease try buying Cutco sissors they work wonders my mom has a pair and last time I was playing with them i actually cut thru a penny with no force at all. I plan on stealing it from her next time i go home from college. If Cutco is to pricy what about gardening clippers from the garden center at walmart? that might work.

p.s. my sissor tip only works for chicken, I almost broke my hand trying to use it on beef necks...lol...good luck

NWilz I grind chicken for my dogs, about 5 years now I guess. I have a Tasin TS-109 1200 watts meat grinder. I grind it for piece of mind and to hide extras, like ground veggies or other supplements. I got mine on ebay and it works great. It was over $100 but less than $150, I think with the shipping. Its been awhile. I also bought one from Northern Tool to try out. The throat you feed pieces into was smaller and it would drag it down, didn't sound like it would last. I kept it for a backup. It does work, just not as good as the Tasin. Another thing you can try for pills is Liverwurst. I have used it with 100% success. Makes into a ball like peanut butter. Or if you are only grinding to mask a few pills and not mainly feeding RAW, I would do as animules said, just don't put the bone in the blender.

If you stick the pills in semi frozen ground meat & first toss the dog a couple little tasty morsels first then toss him the "biscuit" of meat with the pills stuck in it he will most likely gobble them down.  The reason you want it semi frozen is because he won't notice the different texture & eat "around" the pills.

I agree with Animules, don't grind the bones, they are so good for their teeth, just watch for sales & buy ground meat or if you do it yourself, grind boneless cuts.  Since this is only going to be used for the supplements, use as little as you can get away with rather than a meal.

If you prefer to grind the whole meal, as many do, follow TrailRiders advise and get one of those good TASIN grinders!
