Has anyone ever been able to put life insurance on these expensive pups of ours??  I found one company that claimed to do it but is no longer writting policies, another that has a gold health plan with $1000 for loss of life and Lloyds of London told me to find a broker.  I have called several, but no return phone calls.

VPI is excellent!  about $40 a month will get you a lot of coverage for your dog and the company is very reliable, safe and helpful.  I coldn't spend my $ any better.  They have a great friendly website and reps to talk to.

You can buy insurance on your dog like what you are talking about.  I used to have info from a specific company that specialized in this type of coverage.  I probably still do somewhere.

Anyway, it is about the same type of insurance as insuring your heard of cattle.  I would start with a company that does that.

Thanks so much Vicky!  I am hoping to get someone to come out as a vendor for the Sieger Show as there are a lot of puppy clients interested in this.

Well I started with those and struck out on all of them,  either they only do working k-9s or have gotten out of the business.

Hmmm. Well, aren't the dogs we are talking about "working dogs"?  I will go home and look for the company that I have a brochure on and get back to you.  I am working out of town till the 18th so I don't have instant access to the info I need for you.  I just googled "Livestock Insurance" or "Canine Mortality Insurance".  I didn't look for very long to find the ones I did.  I guess in the big scheme of things alot could happen from puppy hood through adult hood and the "value" people put on their pets is often times different from the animals "true value."  Emotions and feelings often times gives a false elevation to the value of a dog!

Maybe this could be someone's "nitch" in the market place!!  Wish I knew more about insurance and how to do this type of business.....I might be interested in doing a business like this........as if I needed anything else on my plate with my Pet Resort and Dog Park opening April 3rd!

Hi Vickie,
Yes that is what I googled too.  By working dog they mean dogs activly in a job on a police force, SAR, ect.  not a sporting/exhibition dog.  Basically, they are catering to municipalities that may lose a dog in active duty or to illness and it helps the community recover the loss and replace the dog quickly.
Most of the livestock people are the ones that no longer do canines, large kennels and liability associated with boarding, but not the one or two dog household.
PetPlan does have up to $1000.00 (depends on how much the dog was, max is $1000) reimbursment for the loss of the he pet due to injury or illness.  I think they are a good resourse for the pet buyer who is getting the 1-2K pup and want to have some protection.  This is like $350 per year though.  Say the dog lives 8 years and has HD, one has then paid $350X8=$2550 and gets a benefit of $1000.00??  There are some medical bills covered here too, but not routine care.  They also offer $500 for a lost pet.  But if the dog is two and gets hit by a car, there is an advantage.

I will keep looking!
