GSDGenetics

by GSDGenetics on 02 March 2009 - 10:03

Who knows how much dogs and other animals are capable of doing, if we humans start noticing and encouraging such behaviors?  I would never have thought a snake would like to look at her own reflection either, or that another snake would learn to recognize the box her live mice for feeding time, comes in and recognize that box the moment I walk into the room with it across the room from her tank.

I've had several GSDs who would take me or someone else in the family by the hand, and lead you to the door and put your hand on the doorknob when they wanted to go out.  (Two of them also would take you by the hand and put your hand on the treat box when they wanted treats, etc.)  These were things the dogs just came up with all by themselves (a little disconcerting to people not familiar with the dogs hand holding and leading behaviors.)  The dogs would grab a hand firmly enough to lead you, and at the same time, softly enough that never EVER did they leave even so much as a mark on the skin!  I've seen many many examples of animals doing things that people assume they aren't smart enough to do.

It's not the animals who are such geniuses, it's humans who aren't yet smart enough to notice and acknowledge many of the smart things animals do!
