i get really annoyed when strangers run up and pet my dogs. i don't think it's good for them to have every tom dick and harry touching them just because they feel like it. some people get so offended when i pull my dogs away. they want to know why i don't want them to pet them and i usually say because i said so. is there any good response to their why? question. my girls are very social and friendly creatures but i prefer to choose who they are friendly with. do you let strangers pet your dog(s)? am i just being weird?
IM WITH YOU. I NEVER LET ANY OL TOMS OR HARRY OR DICKS TOUCH MY PUPS. ONLY GALS ARE ALLOWED TO PET MY PUPS. SAME RULES APPLY FOR MY WATER NOODLE.
They can touch my dog, but only with their forefinger, and only on the third tuesday of the month.
Nope, don't allow strangers to touch my dogs but they can touch me any time :-)
Depends on who it is and how they approach us. I'm not worried about my adults, but I'm very protective of my youngsters and control their experiences as much as possible.

I don't let anyone except for a select few K9 guys and friends near my dog. My dog is rather civil, and doesn't like people standing over him, touching his collar or doing anything he views as dominating. While on the street, absolutely no one comes near the dog. He is calm, confident and dominant. But we all know that most people that want to pet a police dog are not the brightest bulbs in the lamp. I won't take a chance on an accidental bite. The dog is a big mush with me and my wife, but no one else. So, I very nicely say "No, he's working." Then I get asked well will he bite me? Maybe, let's not find out.

Nope, but no one ever wants to anyways.
Not in general. My dogs are there for me, not the public. I do have some friends that come over and their kids get to play with the dogs. I also will let people at the club pet them. Kids running up to dogs in public, and parents that let them, are one big reason I don't take mine to stores often.
I say no. If people ask for a reason why, I tell them that I'm working on getting her more socialized and she might nip them (which is true) and that she needs to learn how to greet people nicely (only half-true: I only want her greeting people nicely that I want her to meet, not strangers!). Then again, it really all depends on who's asking. A stranger who is familiar with GSDs and other large breeds who knows better than to put their hands all over a dog, I'd let my girl sniff him and decide if she wants to be petted. Kids and regular people, no way.
Although I've seriously considered putting a "Working Dog In Training: Do Not Pet" vest on her, just to keep people away! LOL
