I have a 9 month old gsd female. She has never shown any aggression towards anyone.  But yesterday she went ballistic when my son approached me with his swimming noodle in his hand.  She also did this when my husband raised his hand to say goodbye to me while I was vacuuming.  Is this a protection thing going on?  She is normally very, very gentle even towards strangers.  As long as they do not have anything long in their hand!

I am not a pro. but I did have a situation close to that. My girl of 2 yrs was always a little shy to certain situations and I thought it was sweetness (the average person would not be able to tell it was shy)but at 22 mos she started freaking out on people. My sons friends (9-10yr olds) my husband and people she had met before. she never bit but I started to not trust my dog and we loved that dog. Anyhow I might quote this wrong (or spell it wrong) but the Captain had written somwhere a german shepherd should never show aggression to a non threatening person. So trainer after trainer we figred out she was a sharp-shy dog and could very well endanger someone. It was hard my heart said she would never hurt anyone but my head knew the statistics so we parted. One trainer told me,"would you get rid of her if she bit the kids" well of course I said. He replied "then why wait!
So anyway this may not be your situation and you may not have kids but the reason I am telling you this is that you need to get help with her Ask a few trainers that deal with dogs other then Labs and Poodles. And good luck!

I think you said she was shy at 3 months, too? I think you got some trouble brewing and should consult an expert, which I am not. This situation might not be so funny in the future. You might want to reword your heading to get some of the resident experts to weigh in on your situation. Something like: Sudden Aggression in pup, HELP!

New things, sudden movements, suprises, definately with a vacuum going.
Let her have the noodle to play with, keep her at a distance from the vacuum, do more socializing with people and introduce her to more new sights and sounds.
Then observe and decide if she's just plain jumpy, or if it was just being suprised.
Either way it could be weak nerve or fearful behavior.
Was this fear?  Or was it warning?
Not enough information.
