Maybe I am. What on this website to you find hard to believe? Is it the statement that 95% of all GSD have hip dysplasia? I found that one hard to believe. I just bought my first GSD, she is now 5 month old. I spent a lot on time looking at breeders. Many made “our puppies are the best type claims” I was just looking for a family pet. I will not be using her for Schutzhund, or other serious competition. But I did want a healthy dog, with reasonable expectations of good hips, and temperament. And I was willing to pay for this, I knew this wouldn’t come for a $250 backyard breeder. So a site like the one you listed would have peaked my interest. I did and still do believe that SchH titled dogs are a mark of quality breeding stock, a claim disputed on the web page you sighted After looking a many sites, and calling a few breeders I final settled on http://www.steinigtalkennel.com/ not because of wild claims on the website, but because of the recommendation of a trusted individual who bought his dog there. Their prices were in line with what I was comfortable spending, and they were with in an hours drive to my house. This is what I ended up with http://www.schafer.is/gsd/pedigree/421852.html My shepherd mix died after 15 years. I wanted to replace her with a dog of quality breeding to lessen my chances of hip problems or other heath/behavior issues. I think I did my research correctly. I hope I am not gullible and willing to believe wild claims. But this is my first purebred So to answer you original question people are that gullible, I just hope I am not one of them Scott

theses people are asking alot of money on the breeding of untitled dogs?!??! how can it be?!?!?

by Blitzen on 02 April 2005 - 17:04

Scott, Don't take anything you read on this board personally or you will quickly lapse into a deep depression. You did everything right and your dog should turn out to be a good pet. People with a lot more experience in this breed get burned every day by believing a breeder's hollow claims and some of those using the most boastful ads are the big names here and in Europe. Many post to and adverstise on this board and are the first to try to make a newbie feel less than human for buying from a competitor or for asking uncomfortable questions to which they have no intentions of replying with a straight answer. It's not easy to find a modest GSD breeder with modest claims about his dogs and their abilities. I buy a dog magazine from time to time and by far the most advertisements are for GSD's. To read most of the ads one would think their dogs can do everything but shop for groceries and some are in training to do that. IMO, you already did the smartest thing, got a reference from someone who bought a dog from your breeder. Good luck with the puppy, if you have any questions there are some on this board who will jump right in and help you. Others will try to make you feel stupid for even asking, we all know who they are, so will you.

Brittany, If you read his website he is marketing his dogs by addressing the way some breeding titled dogs are cheating the public by not caring about anything but titles, midnight titling, etc. This breeder says his dogs are better because he concentrates on issues other than titling, issues that are more importatnt to the average dog owner. He's targetting the pet market. The 95% dysplasia claim is over the top I hope, but most pet people already know someone who had a GSD with HD and it was so crippled it had to be put down. That is really all the general public knows about the health status of the breed and most likely what most vets tell them to watch out for - HD - be careful who you buy a GSD from, it might "get" HD and have to be killed after your kids get attached. Right or wrong, you have to admit it makes for good marketing strategy. If I were a rank novice, I'd probably think about buying a dog from this guy; after all I don't want a "show dog", just a pet and I don't want him to get all crippled up like some of those temperamental show dogs.

Scott You did fine,The Filo's are good people, have been doing this for a long time and know what they are talking about. Your new pup will be just fine

Blitzen, et. al., As they say - "There's a sucker born every minute", so this guy figures that's quite a potential customer base. A little soft sell patter that has some semblance of rationality to the uninformed, a very high price tag and an unsuspecting/naieve buyer and there you have it. The breeding this guy is doing is an abomination and contributes in no small way to the ruination of our breed. His dogs don't do schutzhund because they can't! Plain and simple. And if he says they can then let him train one and put it on the field in a real trial. I will be glad to apologize if that happens, but I won't hold my breath and I suggest you don't hold yours because it will NEVER HAPPEN. Get educated, go to the SV website, go to the United Schutzhund Clubs of America website. Learn why schutzhund was brought about in the first place and what kind of breeders have compromised the breed.
