ZVZW

Late this evening I got a call from a client who got a pup from me 8 months ago now. She had just gotten back from a Vet who told her that give this dog Antibitics even though the culture showed nothing. She woke this afternoon and his stomach was a reddish/blue.purple color. She said they wanted to do a Biopsy and thats all they offered, but I would think either too much blood, internal bleeding or somehting of that sort, maybe bloat? I have never experienced such a dog in all of the dosg I have trained or worked with, not even when managing for a Vet. I told her to go the another vet NOW, but am curious as to what you all may think it may be. Any experience in this area?

Thanks,

Jerry

sounds to me like a bruise....is it possible that someone in the family is abusing the dog and she doesn't know it?  Or the dog sustained some kind of injury a couple days ago?

Only thing I can think of that causes blue/purple skin is bruising....blood vessels breaking,  Is it possible the dog has a bleeding disorder?

Just throwing things out there...I really don't know.

The bruising on the skin could be a platelet issue.  Please have them go back to the vet and do a CBC to see what is going on. If it is thrombocytopenia and the count is below 10,000 platelets a dog can spontanous bleed.

Just a little update abd BTW thank you, but I talked her into driving over and looked at it,but it wasnt abuse. The owner didnt explain very well about the dog. The stomach is puprle and red but didnt tell me that the stomach area was crustated like it is. I still have never seen anything like that ona dog. I thought mange at first, but it is only on the abdominal region where you see skin between the penis and ribs. But still the Vet that looked at it made no sense of it at all. Of course I found it was Banfield again. Sheesh! She is taking him to a local specialist that I told her to go to today. Thanks again!

Sorry to hear about the pup. Keep us posted. I know they're going to see another vet, but I had a dog years ago that contracted sarcoptic mange and the first place it appeared was on the skin around the penis. So you should make sure they have the vet do a skin scraping, just in case.

I agree with MalShep about the platlet thing...  But then you mentioned the crustiness... so the dog probably inflicted the bruise on itself while scratching... a skin scraping definately sounds in order.

One of my dogs skin goes purple on his stomache in reaction to certain meat proteins, lamb/sheep, whereas other protein sources ie chicken/turkey cause him to rip his fur out with 30minutes of eating. Sounds like the vet maybe on the right track antibiotics for skin infection and skin biopsie to check for allergies! Pam
