Pineapple and stool eating - Page 1

I'd like some info from those who have used pineapple to curb stool eating. My EPI boy is having a slight backslide causing  all

3 of my boys to start stool eating. I dislike it intensely!

Forbid doesn't work.

How much pineapple per cup of feed? Can I use just the juice, or does the fruit need to be added?

How long before It will start to work, if it even does?

Apple Cider Vinager works well!!!  Use 1/4 cup per gallon water and this will help curb the habit.  There is also to many other benefits to using as well for many aspects of their overall health.  I keep ACV in all my animals water 24/ 7 and encourage others. 

Only a few days into it you should notice an improvement. 

I use about 2 tables spoons in my dogs meal. You can also try canned chopped spinach. It works great also. I mix pineapple in one meal and spinach in the other. It seems to work very well.

Apple Cidar Vinagar? In the water? It doesn't effect the taste enough to discourage drinking?  I have heard for years of it's benifit, but never heard of it used for coprophagy.  I'll have to give it a try.

I have not tried that. I am not sure how good that work. I would be afraid that it would make the water taste bad and the dogs not want to drink

The dogs will still drink normal amounts.  I use it in the dogs water as well as the chickens I have.  It will help deter fleas and ticks, help with digestion and nurtient absorbtion, stools will smell less, yeast infections will decrease, it helps with authritus and joint issues, I could go on here about the benefits!   

The only thing I can think of to be aware of - don't use it with metal water buckets or dishes.  Other than that this is one of the safest and best things you can give your dog!

You're very convincing, so much so...... that I now have a very strong urge to drink a tall glass of it myself. LOL   I'm thinking of providing that to my pup just for grins and giggles. Do you know if there has been any kind of medical evaluation/report on serving this to a dog?    Any downside or side effects?

I do not know of any substancial benefits obtained by feeding pineapple to a dog or adding apple cider vinegar to its water. As far as I know, neither will make a dog ill provided they are used in reasonable amounts. I know that all of mine like fresh pineapple and would tolerate a bit of vinegar in their water.

In my life so far I've had but one (1) bitch who would eat her stool, and I suspected a pancreatic issue. This behaviour eventually disappeared as she matured, and her pancreas was/is fine. I used the product "Distaste" for a thirty-day period and it worked well, but the bad habit returned shortly afterwards. I used the product again, and the behaviour finally changed.

In the past, people had a "folk remedy" of  adding meat tenderizer or garlic powder to the dog's food in order to curb this behaviour. I cannot suggest using either of these due to the presense of garlic. In small amounts garlic does not usually affect dogs in a negative way and may be beneficial to some dogs, but it is a proven fact that garlic can poison and kill some dogs. I choose to err on the side of caution and not allow them to eat anything that contains garlic or onions.

Pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain which can aid in digestion of proteins.  Bromelain is also the primary ingredient in one of the meat tenderizers (I think McCormick has bromelain and Adolfs has papain).  Papain is a similar enzyme found in papaya fruit.  So, there is a connection between pineapple/papaya and meat tenderizers with respect to digestion.  Meat tenderizers work by partially digesting the meat.  It makes some sense that adding either pineapple or meat tenderizer to a dog's food might aid in digestion and thus help prevent stool eating if dogs are eating stool due to undigested material present.
