Just wondering what a bicolor pup would look like at birth? Never had one before but might in an upcoming litter. What is the development of the tan from birth and how far up will it go on legs, will any of the face/collar have tan or will a tan collar indicate a black/tan when mature. German shepherds of any coat go through so many changes .

Bi's are the most difficult from birth..I bred a Bastin son to a blk/;red bitch and wondered if any would be bi?

Took 4 weeks before the only one female that had no markings on her face until the 4 th week then all the litte dots came forth and under her tail and her legs...so she was not a bi...had red dashes on sides of face also but tiny tiny until the 6 th week and they became evident that no bi..

My friend in Galveston thought she bought a bi pup , but she turned out to be blk./red/

It would be very dark in color at birth, it will be hard to tell what you have .I would think there would be very limited tan on the legs at birth.I would dare say the face would be black. No tan showing at all ,if any it would be hard to see.Just my 2 cents im no expert in colors unless I know what the dog has produced in the past.

sometimes bicolors are almost solid black at birth - you can tell they are not black by the tan around the vent.  If pups are like this, chances are (but not 100%) they will end up bicolor.  Others are dark black/tan at birth just like other black/tans, but they do not get lighter/more tan as the black/tan pups do.  If they get darker toe-marks and develop MORE black on the feet instead of fading on the feet, chances are they will remain bicolor.  Any signs of brown behind the ears, on belly, thighs or shoulders - not bicolor.  No toemarks or the feet changing to brown = not bicolor.

I have an Ufo van Guy's Hof grand daughter ,solid black except for a few bronze hairs between her toes as a little pup.

She developed a faint tan vent at about 6 mos.Now at 11 mos she has bronze coming in distinctly on the backs of her front legs and faintlt on the inside of her thighs.Does anyone know if Ufo was born black ?

black dogs often have brown between the toes and on the backs of the legs, which gets more distinct as the dog ages.  Not all blacks, but it is not uncommon to see this "shading" on black dogs.  If the dog was born with no brown around the vent, it's a black dog genetically and not bicolor.

Here's my little black girl at 9 days old,

most of my blacks I have had in litters stay completely black all their lives, if a pup has tan on it's "vent" when born,
it is a way to tell that it is not a solid black, when there is tan it is either> sable, or black & tan, or pehaps bi-color....

a true black will not have any gold or red on it's legs, or for that matter anywhere
else on it's body, I would think if he started getting gold or red coming in on his legs then he would be
a bi-color.....

This is the closest I've ever had to having bred a bi-color,  he is not cause he has color on his face:

Molly, do you have any pictures of your pups that show the distinctions between B&T and Bi as young puppies? There's a lot of folks calling their dark B&T's a "bicolor" so there is much confusion. Thanks! -Yvette
