I'm no expert but I think they x-ray's that your vet did are horrible.

by Trini to the Bone on 24 December 2008 - 15:12

Those x-rays are horrible. First of all the femur bones need to be parallel. What your vet probably meant was that the x-rays he took are very poor. If it was me, I would refuse to pay for these x-rays. Go to another vet that can position the dog properly.

Positioning is the worst possible - no way to judge the hips good or bad with these x-rays.  Bring the x-rays back to your vet, throw them in his face and demand your money back.  The only t hing these x-rays tell you is that your dog HAS hip joints.  Take your dog to a vet that knows how to take properly positioned x-rays.

Find another vet!

I love vets that give advice like that when they have no clue... Find a vet that has experience in doing OFA or Penn-Hip certifications... Contact your vet back and tell him/her that you emailed these to the head Ortho Doc at OFA and he asked for the idiot vet that pawned these x-rays off as usable!!!! Bet they will do them again for you or refund your money!!! Alright noone else asked, HOW MUCH DID YOU PAY THE VET FOR THESE????

Bad job on the x-ray, but I think by the look of the femor heads I would be worried.... Little to no neck on eather and there might already be changing of the bone on the right if not both... But have a real vet do it and make sure...!

So far I see nothing that immediately bothers me about the condition of the joints, but this radiographic image should be placed in the Veterinary Hall Of Shame!  Does this veterinarion wish to line his/her pockets with the proceeds from an unnecessary surgical treatment? Forgive me for my apparent paranoia here, but I suggest that you find a different veterinarian!

I am not promoting anyone's website here, but this is an excellent example of postioning requirements. Please go to: http://leerburg.com/hipart.htm and see an example of poor positioning compared to correct positioning. Better yet, show this to your veterinarian and see if he/she understands what was done wrong.

You are not the first poster here presenting shoddy workmanship by a veterinarian. I guess that I am still amazed that this happens. But I do know that veterinarians are much like we engineers; in regards that as colleagues we have the same basic education but generally become specialists in different areas.

So, ask for a free radiograph made in the correct position, and post it here again. I repeat that I do not see evidence of damage or abnormal growth. The sockets appear to be borderline in regards to their depth and size, but the only way to be sure is to make a radiograph with correct positioning.

Best Regards,

No expertise required here to know that your vet has no business taking hip xrays for certification, or diagnosing them.
