GSDs likely cost more because they are popular. They are one of the top ten dog breeds in the US. The laws of supply and demand suggest that the more demand there is for something, the higher the price will be, up to a certain point. I think your friend is barking up the wrong tree because I have seen less than good quality dogs selling for thousands of dollars - and people are willing to pay it.

The original topic is too obvious to draw many replies. Most of us here think GSDs are the best breed, with the exception of a few malinois fanciers. Just find a GSD description and go from there. There are many, many GSD panegyrics on the web.

Thanks Sam. That does make since. Yeah I hate it when she thinks she's always right. I'm a gsd lover and always will be.

Simply, They are THE most all encompassing breed of all dog breeds.   Meaning they are more versatile than any other breed ,IF well bred.   A GSD can and will point if trained for it, its all in the (obedience) training.   They will take out a rat as if they are a jack russell, they can be trained for all sorts of facets of law enforcement, as well as be 'guide to the blind'.  Or become an assistance dog.   Check this link  www.schepk9.com   You go through the proper selection and the dog can do it all.

"I use to always think that as well because of the pricing on the gsd. Any how while we are in this discussion I had a question to add since a friend(former) of mine got into an agrument about it why are the gsd priced higher than the malinois and dutchie? I always thought because they were better than the two and they are popular breed. She said its because its hard to produce good ones so when they do get good ones they are priced high vs mal and dutchies majority (more than gsd) are better and are cheaper. Does that make any sense? "

As a former owner of four Dutch Shepherds, the main difference between Dutchies and my Showlines, was the GSDs are 'thinkers' and the Dutchies are 'do-ers'.     A GSD would think before being told to jump into a dark hole but the Dutchie would just go.   That is what the k9 handlers like about Dutchies and Malinois.  And their boundless energy.  I have never seen my GSds catch a Jack rabitt, but the darn two female Dutchies did!  Their speed and agility is truly what sets them apart.  Intense dogs they are, but only make good family dogs in a super active home.   Which is why I sold all four to Law Enforcement and quit importing the hyenas...

The GSD is more loyal than the Dutchie to their owners.  Meaning, when I sell a GSD to law enforcement, it takes them longer to acclimate that dog from me over to the new handler who trains it.  The Dutchies seem much quicker acclimated to their new handlers, it takes more time and bonding work on the handlers part with the GSD.   See the Dutchies as the Party Animal, as long as they are entertained it seems, they're happy.  Great Dogs, that is true, but too much dog for me to have an X amount of.  I can handle one, easily.

Years ago I rescued a 6-month-old white GSD from a shelter as a family pet. He mastered the obedience basics and we did some agility for fun. One day my ex-husband and I came home from work to find Brutus sitting on the front lawn. Of course we were flabbergasted because he was in the locked house when we left. Upon inspection we discovered that someone had tried to break into our house. They had removed a lower window and must have had the shock of their life when Brutus busted through the screen after them. I’m guessing once Brutus scared the bad guy away, he just sat in the yard, protecting the house, until we came home. He was never trained for this; it was pure instinct. How can I not think that GSDs are the best breed? Karen

Karen,

This is a very impressive story. Thanks for sharing it. I guess you inspected the house for theft afterwards, but nothing was stolen!

Thanks for that input Kerschberger. I'm glad you put it that way. I'm always in a constant battle with this former friend about the gsd. She owns a dutchie. She would constantly down grade the gsd breed and tell me don't get upset if the dog doesn't come out what you wanted when you should get a dutchie or mal. Unfortunely, that is one reason why we don't talk anymore because I'm feed up with the down grading and know it all attitude. I'm interested in getting a gsd for protection work, but still want a dog that will me mellow not hyper active like those two breeds. I never thought of it that way between the two breeds one just does it and the other thinks about it first. I love the gsd breed and think they are magnificent animals.
